Who has had a 12 week scan and been told the sex?

I had my 12 weeks scan today and the lovely sonographer said she thought the baby looked like a girl. She had a clear view and took lots of time.

What do you think?

I might be talking rubbish but i'm pretty sure I got told if they tell you its a boy its usually true but if they say girl, don't believe them totally as its more possible to miss boy bits (so wrongly say girl) then it is to imagine them.

I know one person who was told the sex at 12 weeks and it was wrong.
and I know someone else who was told it, and it was right.,

so erm, I wouldn't get your hopes up, but it could be right! lol

DarrellRivers · 05/07/2008 21:47

boy at 12/40 scan
correct

2point4kids · 05/07/2008 21:48

I got told both times and both times it was correct, but I had 2 boys so not sure if it would be less accurate with a girl?

Was it a private scan or NHS one?
I had private ones and the sonographer (who was very experienced) said that he could tell boy or girl at that stage very easily and always accurate, but that was with a 30 min detailed scan.

largeginandtonic · 05/07/2008 21:49

Yes i thought that too, i have 5 boys and one girl and at each boy scan it has been blatantly obvious it is a boy! She could see nothing but did say that at 12 weeks the genitalia looks very similar.

She also said she had sexed her own daughter at 12 weeks

I was really thinking boy, i like little boys. My dh would be thrilled if it was a girl though and my dd!

Wont say a thing until the 20 week scan though.

hmm, i don't know about 12 weeks, but could definitely see this one's tackle at 21 weeks!

largeginandtonic · 05/07/2008 21:51

She was a private sonographer and she did the nuchal fold too. It was a 20 minute scan and the place was deserted. We were chatting for ages and she had a good look. I saw no willy!

Oh my dd will be so pleased!

I was told at 12 weeks ds1 was probably a boy and it was true - he was.

However I was also told at 12 weeks dc3 was probably a girl - at 20 weeks it was quite clear it was a boy.

They gave the usual caveats "can't be completely sure" etc however the sonographer said quite definitely he thought it was a girl. At twenty weeks we told the (different) sonographer this and she said, whilst scanning, "but would you mind?" "oh no not at all" we said, so... "good, because it's a boy!". Luckily it was true, we didn't mind, if anything slightly favoured a boy.

DC2 (who was a girl) they said at 12 week scan that they couldn't tell yet.

So, I wouldn't take it too firmly. 12 weeks is very early to be able to tell. Do you have much of a preference either way?

And most importantly I guess, if this is your main train of thought after the scan, the baby is fine? Congrats on that

largeginandtonic · 05/07/2008 21:52

Hehe Expat, even if i had not wanted to know at the last few boy scans it would have been very obvious!

I still cant belive you are having a boy! Has it sunk in yet?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 05/07/2008 21:54

not really, g&t. don't think it will sink in till he's here.

she asked if i wanted to know, i said YES!, she froze the screen and it was very obvious!

i got her to do it again at the end of the scan, though, just to see the wee flagpole and erm, tackle, again.

largeginandtonic · 05/07/2008 21:55

Yep all fine and dandy! Was terrified as dd has recently been diagnosed with Turners Syndrome and i had cooked up all manor of horrors in my head.

This is the first time i have had a nuchal fold. Low risk, hoorah! Arms and legs waving, toes and fingers counted. Incredible the detail.

expatinscotland · 05/07/2008 21:56

hurray, g&t!

congratulations.

did you have the blood test as well?

i had the combined screening.

largeginandtonic · 05/07/2008 21:56

Oh boys are so scrumptious. Bless this baby if it is a girl, it will be in blue till it's 10! I have no pink left from dd, she is 8 this month!

OP posts:
largeginandtonic · 05/07/2008 21:58

I did, ds4 was horrified "There is hole in your arm mummy! If you take the plaster off will it spurt blood everywhere?" Nice huh?

I had a private 12 week scan and was told the sex. The sonographer reckoned she had never got it wrong at 12 weeks. I don't know if she was right yet but several friends have been told at 12 weeks and all were told correctly. The sonographer also said neither gender have external genitalia at that age, its to do with the angle of the internal structures and therefore it is no easier to spot a boy than a girl.

2point4kids · 05/07/2008 22:01

If it was a private detailed one then I would bet money on it being correct!
Your DD will be pleased!

theinsider · 05/07/2008 22:04

You really find yourself finally breathing out after the 12 week scan don't you? Having held your breath for 8 weeks or so.

It sounds as though you and your family can find pros for either sex. That's the best way to be.

In my case (with the wrongly-predicted girl) at 12 weeks the sonographer froze the screen and explained the bit which turns into either Penis or clitoris sticks out at one angle for girl and other angle for boy and that this was sticking out at girl angle. "See?" he said, pointing. Yes, I could see. So I agreed, it must be a girl then.

So I would think probably girl, but wait for confirmation at 20 weeks. But I think they advertise they can do private sexing scans for about 16 weeks. If you can't wait another 2 months.

largeginandtonic · 05/07/2008 22:05

I have forgotten what to do with girly bits and pink dresses! DD will have to take over She will also need a new wardrobe

I could not believe the difference in this scan and the very quick dating one at 10 weeks. I am nearly 13 weeks. I could see fingers and toes! I didnt have to have a full bladder too like for previous scans at the hospital. That was a relief too.

She checked the baby thoroughly and said she looks very healthy. Blood tests sent off too but all looks great!

Artichokes when are you 20 weeks?

OP posts:
theinsider · 05/07/2008 22:11

So has she got a name yet?

largeginandtonic · 05/07/2008 22:14

Good lord no, i am useless naming the children. Although it should be easier this time i have been running out of boy names recently!

DH vetoes all my fave names so all the chickens and rabbits have been called them. We have a Penelope, Prudence, Henrietta, Gertrude and Maggie. The rabbits have been Florence, Jemimah and Violet.

I want to call the baby Dorothy but dh would say noooooooooo. >

OP posts:
theinsider · 05/07/2008 22:20

Well you can't name your daughter after a chicken. Better get your name books out again and head to the less-well-thumbed girly section. Enjoy!!

(My tip: Leave it open in the toilet at the page containing the name you like and wait for dh to come out claiming it was his idea)

largeginandtonic · 05/07/2008 22:38

Ah yes am wise to the leave the book open trick

DH will call her some fluffy pink name if given half the chance. Big softie that he is. I am not even looking till 20 weeks!

Night night

I had a 12 week scan where they said it was a boy - the bits look the same (penis/clitoris develop similarly apparently) but they point in different directions; aligned with the spine for a girl, upwards for a boy. The sonographer said it was 70% probably a boy. I had my 20 week scan a couple of weeks ago, and the FMC were right - it's definitely a boy,. You could see his penis, scrotum, the works! So they clearly can tell at 12 weeks to an extent, just not definitively.

Boys names are driving us nuts. We agree on girls, but boys...I want Gabriel, DH is adamantly against. He likes Sean, I don't. We're defaulting to Thomas at the moment, purely because neither of us actively hates it.
