missed the pill for one day - is it just ineffective on that day or for the whole cycle?

feel a bit asking this as i have been taking the pill (apart from when getting pg and being pg) for years but i don't know the answer! Totally forgot to take pill one day and only realized following day, so what is the chance of getting pg on that day or any day in the cycle?
Would be totally fine if i was pg though, in fact my dh would be delighted - he is champing at the bit for another dc! Just wanted to know the probabilities..
TIA

I think it depends on your pill but with mine, if I miss one, we're supposed to use precautions for 7 days after the missed one

JennsterSlugSlayer · 05/07/2008 14:33

Depends where you are in the packet. If you are on a combined pill, then you can technically be safe to miss 3 pills consecutively in the middle of the packet. I wouldn't though! If the missed pill is at the beginning or the end of the packet, then you are more likely to have an accident.

If the pill is progesterone only then you may well not be covered.

thanks tilly, the pill i take is microgynon.
its such an old packet (from before i had my ds - but still in date!) i have lost the important bit of paper that tells you such things!

Microgynon is a combined pill. You should use extra protection for the next seven days while continuing to take the pills.

thomasina1 · 05/07/2008 17:23

as long as you had taken it for 7 consecutive days before you missed one you should be protected. You need the 7 consecutive days for protection for a further 7 days, so if you are near the end of the pack you should start another one straight away.

thanks for all your helpful advice..
hmm seeing as this happened a few days ago there is the possibility i could be pg already..but hey ho, think we would be happy really has made me realize i AM ready for another one

is the mini pill progesterone only?? have only just started it and keep missing it but am having sex still.

mylittlepudding · 05/07/2008 20:27

fairylights that's great! but yes, barrier protection for 7 days. sounds like you will be stopping them anyhow!

scorpio - you are going the right way for a pregnancy, tbh. they are not reliable if you miss them, and 7 days protection is needed for the mini-pill if it is more than 3 hours late (12 hours for cerazette). Maybe something other than the pill would be more wise?

scorpio1 · 05/07/2008 20:30

i don't want another coil yet, i had dd 11 weeks ago and she was a big baby for me, cannot bear any more poking yet.

Another would not be end of world and i have told DH i missed them before sex happened. I have thought i will set an alarm to make sure i take it.

scorpio1 · 05/07/2008 20:31

i have missed 4 pills out of 19 so far.

scorpio1 · 05/07/2008 20:32

Will use condoms for rest of month, i think. thanks.

mylittlepudding · 05/07/2008 20:32

I would consider you not protected at all. Depo maybe? An implant?

scorpio1 · 05/07/2008 20:34

I do not want an implant and GP says depo not great for me because of heavy bleeding.

Looks like i will have to get over it and have a coil .
