Pain in ribs

Am 33 weeks pregnant. For about last 3-4 weeks have been having rib pain (upper right hand side). Books and midwife all say this is normal, nothing can be done and it may go away when baby drops in 3-4 weeks but in meantime am in excruciating pain that nothing seems to help. only comfortable position seems to be flat on back but did not think we were supposed to lie flat on back at this stage. Please help....... am beginning to get quite hysterical about this!

Unfortunately i can not say anything to help, i can sympathise though, when i was pregnant ds used to like sticking his foot under rib/chest, i could feel it and it was really uncomfotable. Sorry i can't be of any help, but mine went away when his head dropped. Good luck and hope it goes away soon.

Ooh, me too. Your post has reminded me about it! I cannot offer any help either, sorry, but much sympathy to you. I was in agony for 9 weeks before birth (ds was 3 weeks late nearly), and did not know what to do with myself sometimes. People tell you to get as much sleep as you can...yeah right, when you can't get comfortable in any position! Perhaps you could lie on your back, propped by a few pillows...do you think that would help? Good luck anyway. Not long now...

I rmemeber this too. No advice really, but hope that it will pass. I dont remember being told not to lie flat on back, why not? If its comfy, I'd do it!

I had a lot of pain and burning sensation in my ribs when I was pregnant with #3. I remember laying down and the stretched out feeling helped releive this for a short time.

Do you know what position your baby is in, Sam29? If it's lying awkwardly maybe the optimal positoning ideas could help shift it to a better position. I had bad rib pain with my 1st and 4th pg's - both of which were posterior babies. My own theory is that because my baby was facing my front, when it did its exercises it could use my ribs to push off. It really did feel like that, so sore.

I understand that lying on the back for too long causes reduced blood flow. I used to pass out if on my back for any length of time when pg.

I had awful rib pain from about 24 weeks with my first. He is a long and very active baby! What helped me was to go swimming - try it and see...
