What it’s like with 3 kids and your partner working late?

I need advice.

I work part time and my partner full time. We are wanting a 3rd but I’m just worried as he works 2pm-10.30pm and only gets 2 days off a week which are random. I’m just worried if I’d be able to cope by myself, I know they ain’t little for long so I’d be stupid to let this put me off!!!

we have a 6 year old at full time school and a 3 year old who goes to full time nursery school at the same place

i think id be fine in the Day as it will be me and the newborn but its after school rush and weekends with 3 kids, i know it will be overwhelming trying to sort tea, bath, with 2 kids and a newborn. Where do you put the newborn?

is anyone else in a similar position? How are you finding it?

he could maybe work 6am-2pm in the future but I don’t know how it would all be with him being exhausted for work and effecting his work

Not totally the same but my husband works offshore on a rotation and can be gone for two weeks, 3 weeks or more and then back. We didn’t have a third which I feel sad about but it’s so full on alone. I’d think about it really carefully. You don’t have support or respite. Make sure you’re ok being alone. Once you’ve got a third you’re in it and can’t go back

You’d get into your own routine. I have three and my husband used to work late. I would put newborn either in the sling or lying in the Moses basket and I took her whether I went. It was worse when she was a bit bigger and wanted to move. But I used to put her in her cot whilst I ran the bath etc and I got my oldest to talk or play with her. Then we would all go into the bath and a bathed all three together or I would go into as well. Then I would put baby to bed, then number two and then number one.

I found bedtimes easier than afternoons as there was a set routine whereas anything could happen on a Saturday afternoon 😂

My DH works ridiculously long hours - he left today at 7.45 am and is still not home. He is never home on Thursday mostly and often has breakfast meetings m .

I would have struggled with a third. I had 2 but my son is disabled but I don’t work. It’s been Hell to be honest. Everything is on you.

Nobody could possibly tell you. You could get a very content, dream of a baby like my second, or a baby who cries around the clock and doesnt sleep through the night until reception like my third 😅

I have four under seven and DH works away for weeks at a time.

I don’t bath them all every night, it’s every other night. Once over with baby wipes on non bath nights.

Baby is EBF so I don’t have to think about that. The rest eat the same food and I eat with them. We have stories together then bed.

The only time it’s problematic is if anyone is really sick, then I call on family or friends to help out, but I am very lucky in that department.

I don’t work so I have time to do housework and have cleaner.

You ask about where to put newborn. Mine was just plonked in Moses basket if I needed to put them down to do something.

You just adapt. I’m trying for number five 😍

I think you’ll be fine!

My husband doesn’t routinely work as late as yours, but he starts work before 8am and is often home after 8pm. I actually quite like doing bedtime on my own. I think it helps that there’s no strict deadline that we have to achieve! Personally, I find getting everyone up and out for school in the morning much more challenging.

Newborn used to be quite happy on a changing mat on the bathroom floor whilst the other two had a bath.

HappyViewer · 19/10/2026 21:33

I actually found it easier during the week when it was just me around, we had a nice routine.

My friend did this as single mum, newborn usually in a sling or sleeping in Moses basket and she is just really very strict with making her children stay in bed once in. Mine doesn’t obey me!

Baby in sling, now mine is 3 months he’s content in the bouncer too

I actually much prefer doing dinner/bath/bed alone and have got into a good routine

Don't be my friend. Two biddable, calm, sweet kids... DH worked a difficult police job... third came out screaming and screamed for three years solid.

They are divorced. I feel for her. But he was a smug git who gave me parenting advice based on having two easy babies.

Have a real think about if the third is high needs.

Thankyou everyone, you have made me feel better haha. He may have a choice to do 6am-2pm in the future but I’m not sure which would be better???? Or stay at 2pm-10:30????
