Advice on early symptoms - potential miscarriage

looking for advice from others

I believe that I’m just over 5 weeks pregnant, I tested on Friday and it was a complete shock - to say this weekend has been a whirlwind of emotions would be an understatement.

on Sunday morning I woke up having bled over night, a lot of discharge and spotting. I then passed small blood clots in the toilet. This was accompanied by mild period like pain.

since then I have had regular blood when I wipe - not massive amounts and not sinking through my pants but noticeable.

i feel in my heart that this is a miscarriage, I tested again today and had a faint positive line still but I’m aware this could just be because I have HGC levels and could carry on for a few weeks I am booked in for an early check up next week at the hospital.

honest feedback please, does this sound normal or like a miscarriage?

Hi there OP. So sorry to hear you've had this experience. We're just bumping this for you. Hopefully someone with more experience will be along soon.

I'm sorry to hear that OP. I'm sorry, but it does sound like a MC given the amount of bleeding/clots you've had. I've had 3 ranging from 7-12 weeks. In saying that though, there are cases of having a small around of bleeding and it being all ok. Often from a subchorionic haematoma.

Is it the EPU that you have an appointment with next week? Was this made before the bleeding or since? I'm a bit surprised they are waiting a week, but as hard as it might be to hear, there is nothing they can do if it is indeed a MC.

I wish you all the best, but if not, this site is very helpful. They also have a phone line if you want to speak to someone. Otherwise, I'm happy to answer questions if I can xxx

I am so sorry OP, but as a woman who has experienced 5 miscarriages this does sound like one. Big hugs OP and take care of yourself.

EPUs often won’t scan before 6 weeks to confirm anything as there’s often not much to see before then and they can’t confirm either way and end up having to bring you back anyway. So I’m my experience unless there’s reasons to suspect an ectopic pregnancy some EPUs will only scan after 6 weeks regardless of bleeding etc.

hi everyone

Thankyou for the responses, I’ve tested again this morning and the line has faded slightly and there was a lot of blood this morning so I am strongly leaning towards this being a miscarriage.

i am going to ring my GP this morning and see if there’s anything they can do to support/help me here. This is the test from yesterday (top) and today (bottom which I believe is 30 days since ovulation) I would expect a stronger line

You could ask your GP if they will do blood tests 48 hours apart to see if your HCG is rising as it should or not. That’s pretty much all they could do though unfortunately.

I’m sorry it all sounds so rubbish - and yes, very much like my 2 early MCs. The reason the EPU appt is next week is that they don’t scan you until 6 weeks as they can see so little before then. They’ll probably do bloods at the same time (with my first MC they did repeats 48 hours later, with my second it was only one lot and between the low HGC level - 60 - and the nothing on scan, they must have decided a second wasn’t needed). Be prepared for the scan to show absolutely nothing….

I’m sorry, it’s horrible 😢

Thanks for responding! Did your lines look like this? My friend who is a few weeks ahead of me had a really strong line at 5 weeks - seems odd mine are quite faint, unless I’m just not as far on as I think.

who knows it’s a guessing game right now which is the worst part, hopefully I can get some closure from the doctors.

i think the heavy discharge a few days back and then on and off bleeding isn’t a good sign though.

i know it’s too early for tests to be done but it feels awful not being able to just know for sure!!

Yeah, I was getting what I thought was decent lines on FRERs, but then squinters on cheapies with my first MC. Those then hung around frustratingly for about 3 weeks before I got complete negatives again, even though my 48hr repeat bloods were only 27 (previous had been 43).

With my second MC I was possibly slightly further on - 6 weeks when I started bleeding - but I’d had a brief light bleed a week beforehand and I should have suspected when I didn’t get the 3+ on CB when I calculated I should have hit the 2,700 HGC mark. I wasn’t getting dye stealers on other tests either.
