Hi all,

Reaching out here for advice and just a warning in advance I discuss loss here

I lost a pregnancy at 2 months back 2 years ago. First time I was pregnant and we were devastated. It was a much planned for baby

The pregnancy was hard from the get go. Following the loss I spent time trying to understand why including the issues around my mental health I experienced during the pregnancy. To cut a long story short, during my pregnancy I was in line to see a psychiatrist and even after the loss I was told it’s very likely I am autistic and what I experienced was extreme overwhelm and later that year I was diagnosed. I also spent a year in therapy on the grief of it all and received help from my local NHS perinatal team

Unfortunately I haven’t fallen pregnant again. The journey has been very lonely but I did confide in my cousin who would occasionally reach out. I went to her wedding during the height of my struggles. In our last convo she was like you will get pregnant you will see it. Recently she text me saying she was pregnant with a baby scan attached saying they are excited. I’m really happy for her. Given my own struggles I appreciate what a blessing it is to fall pregnant and have a baby.

However I am shocked at the lack of sensitivity about how she landed the message. I appreciate she text me but there has been no thought about it. Not even how are are to follow afterwards. I have congratulated her.

just for context we grew up together and we are close. She’s seen me cry and at my lowest. I spoke to her in detail about the miscarriage

I can’t really say throughout our relationship she has shown up for me. after my loss, even though we were close she never reached out to see how I am other than to find out what’s going on in my life

If anything I find she tries to compete with me and I’ve never understood why. After she found out about my miscarriage she started reposting videos of social media of babies so I shut down all my social media to avoid it. she had never been interested in babies before then or ever posted content like that but I felt she became hooked after she found out I had clearly started trying for a baby

She’d call me to find out how the baby journey was going and would ask quiet intrusive questions. In fact the last time she called, I now realise she was pregnant but of course I didn’t know at the time.

During my grief I’ve been so lucky to have some amazing people reach out. Extend their hand and show me love and from people I never expected. Just to cheer me up and see if I am ok

welcome thoughts on all of this. Should I feel this way? Should there have been more sensitivity? What should I do next

I would find that insensitive too, particularly the reposting of baby stuff after your loss: that's insensitive at best, malicious at worst. I'd have liked more sensitivity around the announcement too, and it's disappointing that that didn't happen. I'd probably try to accept that she's not always sensitive to your feelings; you can still be close and enjoy each others company, but she's obviously got some limitations to her ability to support you. That's evidently who she is. You can be disappointed and simultaneously accept her for who she is.

I hope your pregnancy journey takes a turn soon xx

I would find that insensitive as well and I think you should distance yourself a bit from her, asking intrusive questions really crosses the line to me.

Is your partner/husband supportive?

Gosh I’m so sorry you’re going through this and I think it was terribly insensitive. I can also relate to this -

I had endometriosis surgery, IVF and then a miscarriage. My miscarriage absolute wrecked me. One of my best friends was always asking how it was going and I really appreciated her checking in. I shared a lot of the really dark stuff.

She had been dating her boyfriend for 10 months and she volunteered that she wouldn’t wait to get married before having a baby but she would wait to get engaged first. I felt like we had been open about our conception journeys. She wasn’t engaged and 2 months after my miscarriage we met up for lunch. Part way through lunch she holds up a camera to “take a selfie”. It was me, her and our friend. It was on video and I queried why. She goes “I just wanted to take a photo of the four of us. The FOUR of us.”

That was her pregnancy annnouncement. She was 16 weeks pregnant and in her excitement explained that she had been trying from exactly the time I had my endo surgery and began IVF and it happened the first try. I was really really shaken by the fact that during that time she had asked me all these personal questions and she kept on repeat sharing that she was waiting to get engaged. If she had wanted to keep it quiet I would have understood, but the fact she kept talking about her timeline as well as asking me probing questions made me feel we were having an open conversation. Honestly I felt quite violated by it and was physically shaky after it happened and only slept two hours that night. It was such a shock and I was thinking back over all these conversations and questions she asked and these knowing comments she made.

She did something similar to another friend in a different context (withholding info and left my friend shaken up). I said I needed space for now and blocked her. My next embryo transfer has stuck, I’m 22.5 weeks, but I still haven’t really gotten over her behaviour and have no intention of speaking to her again.

Im not suggesting that with your cousin as an approach but just sharing as I understand how viscerally these things can be felt

I would ask her to hold off on sending any more baby scan photos to you. You understand she’s excited and you are happy for her, but at the same time you are still grieving and struggling with your fertility journey

Thank you all for sharing your stories

Its helped reaffirm that I shouldn’t feel bad for wanting support and some sensitivity

I don’t have many friends or family I lean on and neither am I vulnerable to others. I only ever opened up to my sister and my cousin about my miscarriage. It took a lot for me to do that so the lack of sensitivity came left field for me

I think for now I will distance myself. I wished her congratulations. Her response back was pretty short to say thank you and that was it. I am sure in time a baby shower invite will follow and I will make an excuse and decline

My husband is supportive. He was shocked and really angry for me.

My husband is a pretty relaxed guy but has seen everything I’ve gone through. He felt knowing everything I have been through she would have been more sensitive

His view was keep it cool, congratulate her and step back to prioritise my own wellbeing

@SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite many congratulations! I was so please to hear your embryo stuck and I’m really sorry to hear what you endured with your friend

I don’t blame you for cutting her out. How thoughtless

Thank you so much 🤗. I think taking a step back and definitely making an excuse for the baby shower (we are entering the flu season!) sounds like a good strategy xx
