My baby was on the 11th centile and all was absolutely fine. They said they don't worry if the baby is above the 10th, which at the time frustrated me because I felt 11 was so close to 10 and I missed out on extra monitoring by one point, but in hindsight this was because all was fine 🙂

Ahh thank you for your reply. What did your LO weigh and did you go full term? X

Yes, I did go full term, actually a few days overdue! She came in her own time, with no medical intervention. I'd been told to expect a small baby so had bought clothes accordingly, but when she was born she was actually a very average weight, like 7lbs or so! X

How big are you and the babies father? Smaller people will generally have smaller babies. Remember centiles demonstrate a normal range and the change in centiles for no apparent reason is something that can indicate a problem, not necessarily the actual centile itself. If the midwife and Dr are not worried then you shouldn’t be.

We are both tall to be fair. I was born 7lb6 and dad was 7lb8. My first child was 7lb3 so im not sure if this baby will be smaller? Just seem so small to me c

Hi OP, I had extra growth scans for different reasons in my first pregnancy and baby was measuring normal. He came out at 39+2 weighing 5lb8, 2nd centile. No issues otherwise. Now a completely average sized toddler, eats like a horse!

I'm getting extra monitoring and aspirin now with my second pregnancy, I was 9lb3 at birth, 5'6ish now and DH is 6' but was also born small albeit a month early. I'm not sure what these growth scans are really going to show this time but hopefully the aspirin helps with flow from the placenta.

LavenderSweetPea · 19/10/2026 12:12

I wouldn't worry too much, scans are just an estimate anyway, but on 12th percentile it's not concerning - if you imagine 100 randomly selected people there would be 11 people smaller than the 12th percentile one. They'll want to keep checking though just to make sure baby isn't going down the centiles as that might indicate growth restriction/another issue

My baby measured 10th all the way through pregnancy and he came out 6lb8oz at just over 37w (natural labour, not induced). So smaller than average but not that small, and definitely not unusual for that gestation.

Daughter in law was told all through pregnancy that baby was small. When born she was a perfectly normal weight. Other daughter in law told to be prepared for a big baby. Again, perfectly normal weight. Obviously they have to monitor and tell you if they have concerns but 12th centile sounds fine.

Second babies are usually bigger, however in the absence of any other health marker giving concern I am sure things are ok. But get some rest, not easy when you have a child already, but rrope your partner and family in to help.

The only time I would worry is if baby is crossing lines. They will have given baby a percentile at 20 weeks too. If they have been 5-20th percentile (to allow for some variation) then I wouldn’t worry.

I had issues but my baby went from 60 to 40 to 20 to 3rd percentile.

The percentile is just some babies need to be smaller and some bigger, it’s a % against average sizes. As long as they stay roughly the same try not the panic. If baby drops below the 10th they might want some extra scans but this is procedure for babies below the 10th and above the 90th as the stats show extra monitoring has beneficial outcomes and catches if there are issues (not all these babies have issues).

I don’t grow babies very well even though im
tall. Both my boys have now caught up, my eldest was born on the 3rd and now is 97th for height.
