Potential Cystic Hygroma

Hi everyone,

I’m 12 weeks pregnant with my first child. Had an early scan at 9 weeks and everything looked great. Had a 12 week scan yesterday and was told the baby has an NT of 2.8mm - which is slightly higher than average. She told us she wanted to refer us to fetal medicine for another opinion and that they would ring me the same day.

After an agonising wait, they rang me and said actually the issue wasn’t the NT measurement itself but that there were separations (can’t remember the full details, as I was a mess at this point). And it was the abnormalities in the NT that they wanted a referral for. Anyways, they’re saying it could be nothing but could also be a cystic hygroma and/or could be consistent with conditions such as Down’s Syndrome, Turner Syndrome or Patau Syndrome. I’m waiting for the results of the chromosome tests - which will hopefully be back in a few days.

I’ve been an absolute mess for the last 24 hours, to the point I had a meltdown at work and got sent home (not my finest hour).

Has anyone experienced this? And is there good news out there?! I’ve been tormenting myself, in between crying, by Googling everything under the sun. Being that it’s my first pregnancy, I don’t know how stressed I should actually be and how common this is. Been the most agonising 24 hours of my whole life 😢 SOS.

A friend had similar and underwent amniocentesis. All was well and her son is in his thirties now.

I had a cystic hygroma and NT of I think 5. I had a CVS which came back clear for everything. Baby had a heart condition that was monitored during the pregnancy.
She had one surgery at 2 months and full corrective surgery at 6 months and is now a happy healthy 3 year old with no lasting consequences.

Thank you both, I’m absolutely going out of my mind with worry. I’ve been referred to University College London Hospital for a further scan - It’s all just a waiting game now to see what happens. Horrendous
