How long did it take you to conceive?

Me and my husband have just entered what will be our sixth cycle of TTC. In all honesty, I never thought it would take this long, it’s been pretty difficult. What I have taken some comfort in is that I’m not the only one who it hasn’t happened instantly for as it seemed like everyone I knew had conceived so quickly. I have stopped with the LH strip testing and now just baby dance every other day whilst still tracking BBT purely so I can have an idea of when I ovulate. How long did it take you to conceive and what do you think helped?

Three months with DC1 and immediately after stopping the pill with DC2. I think trying to forget about trying for a baby, enjoying sex and getting on with your life is the best plan. My mother recommended getting drunk and trying a new position and my neighbour swore it worked. DiL bought a new Mercedes and immediately got pregnant. I had a friend who gave up thinking about it and took a promotion at work. I think all the worrying, monitoring and stress works against you.

10 cycles with DC1
0 cycles with DC2 (we weren’t trying and he was a delightful but very unplanned surprise)

4 cycles which resulted in an early loss. 2 cycles to conceive my son. 1 cycle to conceive the baby that I’m currently 36 weeks pregnant with.

7 cycles with my first. Felt like forever but it's normal to take a year or 2.

Around 12 cycles with first pregnancy, then 1 or 2 cycles for the 3 pregnancies after that (2 miscarriages).

I felt like the first time we were putting too much pressure on ourselves, doing it too often (2x a day sometimes or daily) or just missing the fertile window. Since then we only do it every 2nd day during the fertile window and it's worked several times now :) I also took Before Conception vitamins from Pregnacare most recently to make sure my iron, vitamin d and folic acid levels were all good too.

5 years and 7 IVF rounds

Second cycle. I was 35. I've never been on the pill. I know I'm very lucky.

After 6 months trying we went to a fertility clinic (I was anxious already). Boom, male infertility. Got pregnant with our first IVF round.

Doubletroubledoubled · 12/10/2026 21:03

9 months for my first, 6 for the second, 3 for the 3 and number 4 was a lovely surprise that needed no effort.

DC1 first cycle, DC2 several years. We decided not to go down the IVF route because we had DC1. We have almost given up hope and have ten years between DC1 and 2. DC3 was a pleasant surprise just over two years later.
Three DC with a gap of thirteen years between DS1 and DD1.

First pregnancy I was having very irregular periods with long cycles (undiagnosed underactive thyroid at the time) so perhaps an over 6 months & I do remember feeling a bit stressed. (Ended in late MMC)

Second, third & fourth pregnancies all 2nd cycle (and successful births).

I’m sorry OP, I know 6 feels long. It’s entirely within the normal range tho & I agree with your approach of regular sex & less planning. Best of luck.

I was 42, we had a long journey to parenthood. We stopped trying as in fertility treatment or monitoring cycles and went back to living life. A year on, celebrating New Year, I consciously thought 'that's it then, it's not to be', I was already pregnant.

holachicatita · 12/10/2026 21:18

First cycle with all four of mine. I realise I'm extremely lucky in that regard.

HappyViewer · 12/10/2026 21:19

Three times I stopped the pill and was pregnant around 13 days later.

Three years and three unsuccessful rounds of fertility medication and intra-uterine insemination before conceiving with our first.

Second month with our second.
