Fresh continuous bleeding at 5 weeks pregnant

Hi all,

I know there are already endless threads about bleeding in early pregnancy, but I'm still wondering whether anyone has had an experience more similar to mine. I am ca 5+4 weeks pregnant after IVF (currently in 2 progesteron pessaries a day), and 5 days ago started bleeding. For two days it was reasonably light and mostly on wiping - though more than spotting - but for the last 3-4 days it seemed much more like a period. I had mild to moderate period-like cramps for 2 days and had fresh blood on every wipe and had to change pads 2-4 times a day. For the last two days the cramps have subsided but I am still bleeding. It is always fresh blood, and I have passed a few small clots, too. Pregnancy tests are still strong positive and my HcG blood test 3 days ago was within the expected range, which was reassuring to some extent.

I will finally have a scan tomorrow (which is the earliest they would do it). I am aware this could be either an early loss (though I do wonder whether the cramps and amount of blood would have been even worse?) or a hematoma (particularly since I fell off my bike 2 days before I started bleeding). I suppose I am just wondering whether anyone had a positive outcome after quite such a long bout of fresh bleeding - I feel like most posts refer to spotting or brown blood, which is not what I'm experiencing. I only have one more day to wait but it is slightly agonising! Any thoughts so so welcome.
Thank you!

Sending you hugs op. Ive bled through pregnancies and had two healthy children but not with clots the clots have resulted in miscarriage but hopefully this is just from falling off your bike and all is well. Please update us after your scan x

Sorry you’re going through this 💐

I can only speak of my experience, I started bleeding 5w6d. Scan confirmed large haematoma, the bleeding I had was dark in colour and rarely fresh blood, and I didn’t need a pad as it only happen when standing after sitting, it wasn’t a continuous flow.

The pregnancy ended up in a loss at 7 weeks, but due to a missed miscarriage, we’d seen a (weak) heartbeat the week before - all in all chances are they were all related and it wasn’t a viable pregnancy from the start.

I understand this won’t be what you wanted to hear, especially after IVF, but it’s my experience of bleeding in pregnancy. You’ll also hear so many positive ones which I pray is your outcome 💕

I didn’t have IVF so I can’t speak to that but I did have quite a lot of bleeding right up until 10 weeks. I have pcos and bleed for a week before heavy periods and the bleeding was of a similar pattern- so more than spotting but not enough to be considered a period. It came back briefly at 15 weeks too. DD is nearly 3. As I understand it bleeding can be quite common in pregnancy although obviously very worrying nonetheless. Good luck with the scan, hopefully with the positive tests and HcG levels looking good it will all be ok

I had a sub chorionic hematoma (red blood, sharp cramps) with DC1 at 5 weeks 5 days (also an IVF baby) and all was ok in the end. Will keep my fingers crossed for you xx

Wishing you all the best tomorrow @Spoonlyit’s such a scary place to be. It’s just so hard to know with bleeding as things may be fine or may not be. IVF pregnancies are more prone to bleeding.

I am 21 weeks with an IVF pregnancy and have had 3 enormous bleeds. With a lot of clots (one was 5cm), some coming out during scans onto the bed and with mild cramping. I’ve had brown bleeding around those perhaps 60% of the time. The first very heavy bleed was at 7+1 and the last one was around 18 weeks. My bleeds were heavier than a period and for 48 hours very heavy and then I had red blood for a week or so after before it moved into dark / brown. I was later told I had the tiniest degree of placenta previa which can cause this

Keeping everything crossed for you xxxx

edited for typos

Thank you so much everyone for your kind replies, it's so nice to feel not alone in this! I also had some bleeding in my first pregnancy, but much later on and much less.
I am preparing for the worst and hoping for the best and will update after my scan tomorrow.

I'm sorry that this is not the update that people who find this thread in the future will be wanting to see, but unfortunately my scan confirmed an early miscarriage this morning. In case it is useful information for anyone, I had two days of spotting, two days of slightly heavier bleeding with cramps though they were no worse than (mild/moderate) period cramps, followed by 4 more days (and counting) of moderate bleeding. I'm not uncomfortable anymore and they said it should sort itself out without further intervention. Obviously gutting but I'd rather know now than several weeks down the line, I suppose. Thanks again for the kind responses!
