Hi, I am currently 27w3d, first time mum. Bit of background…. Occasionally since 13w I have woken up in the night to pee only to find I can’t pass any urine but eventually managed to after moving around thinking it could be my uterus pressing on my bladder.
However, for the first time Thursday night I woke up with a very full bladder and couldn’t pee at all, not even after drinking more water, running the tap and trying to relax on the toilet. Rang maternity triage who asked me to attend hospital and by the time I arrived the pain was excruciating, I could barely stand. An in/out catheter drained over 800ml urine. They trialled me trying to pee by myself and I managed to pee once before then going into retention again and needing a further 700ml+ drained and a Foley catheter left in for 48 hrs.
Catheter was removed Sunday morning and I was able to pee easily again up until Monday night when I woke to find I couldn’t pee again and had to be admitted to hospital overnight where they drained over 1L of urine and I’ve now got a foley catheter in for 7 days until they remove it again next Tuesday.
I have an appt with an obgyn consultant next Monday to hopefully investigate the cause of the retention as so far there has been no explanation for the retention. An US of my bladder and uterus show the baby isn’t squishing my bladder but a midwife noticed on Monday night that my urethral opening looked red and angry with some green stuff which she’s swabbed but the doctor didn’t seem concerned unless a culture comes back from it and it could just be a catheter reaction as opposed to cause of retention. All urine dips have been clear of infection. I had endometriosis removed from my bladder last November but had no problems from that since.
Has anyone else had this issue this far into pregnancy? All I can see online is post partum retention or in early pregnancy which resolved itself.
