Can anyone explain an unusual finding on my early pregnancy scan?

I'm hoping someone here can help tell me what I'm looking at on my scans please.
I had an early (private) scan at 6 weeks to check the location etc but there was no heartbeat so went back today at 7 weeks to see if there was any progress. Good news that there was a heartbeat, but unfortunately they've identified some 'intrauterine embryonic structure' that apparently could go away on it's own, or could potentially be an indication of chromosomal issues later down the line according to the clinic.
I just called an NHS EPU and they didn't understand the scan results I read out and gave advice for hematoma and said there's nothing they can do so they won't see me.
The clinic have told me it's definitely not a hematoma and all they can say is that's it's made of cells and tissue, and the NHS should be offering scans to keep an eye on what's happening.
I'm going to phone my midwife on Monday and ask to be referred that way, but I'd be so grateful if anyone can explain to me what's happening in the scan. I'm preparing myself that this pregnancy may not be viable, but I really need to understand what's going on. I'd also love to hear from anyone else who had a scan like this and what your outcome was.
I'll upload the scan photos and hopefully they'll appear shortly.
Thanks so much

I would contact your clinic and ask them to refer you to NHS- I think you need to be scanned by foetal medicine. This is something they should be doing not you trying to organise this care. Wishing you well, sorry you are in this limbo.

If it he,ps I had a haematom, nd even when scanned by nhs there was nothing they could do about it. All was well, had a few light bleeds only, thankfully,

Do you have a full report from the ultrasound?

bababamama · 03/10/2026 17:44

There is nothing they can do though. This is why early scanning is not useful. You will have an nhs scan in 3-4 weeks and at that point the foetus is large enough to check preliminary structures, the full abnormality scan is at 20 weeks for good results reason. If the pregnancy isn’t viable your body will usually take care of itself. I don’t want to sound harsh as I know you are worrying but they cannot change the outcome at this point if there’s a serious issue

Honestly, this is why private early scans aren’t always a good idea, it annoys me that clinics that offer them don’t always offer follow up care. Have you considered a private obstetrician appointment for reassurance? It’s unlikely the NHS will do anything without symptoms.

Sorry can’t edit so just want to say that wasn’t meant to sound harsh, wishing you all the best.

I had an NHS early scan for medical reasons and the found one embryo and heart beat and something else that looked like an empty yolk sac. At 12 weeks they found identical twins.
They are now teens and I often wonder who was the undeveloped sac! That doesn't look like the case here but it shows how much early scans can miss.

@bababamama thanks for your reply and you are fully entitled to your opinion on private scans. But I was asking specifically if anyone had experience with the scan result I had, so I can better prepare myself for what lies ahead. I know the NHS can't perform miracles if there is something really wrong, but I'd rather have this situation monitored and managed.

Could it be partial molar pregnancy?
I hope you get answers op xxx

With the absolute caveat that it isn’t infallible, I’d upload the photos and the report to ChatGPT and see what it says. It diagnosed DH’s shingles that way when I was asking it what kind of insect bite it was!

Wishing you all the best ❤️
