5 weeks spotting freaking out

I’m 5 weeks pregnant. I had a surprise positive on Sunday. I thought I’d started my period has had light brown spotting but it stopped. I took a test as I was 3 days late and got a strong positive.
since I’ve had intermittent brown discharge and cramps.
I had a MC around 5-6 weeks in Feb which started as mild spotting too.
I have two children, 8 & 10yrs so it’s been a while…but with them I had no spotting at all. But that was a long time ago. I’m 35 now.

I'm wondering whether to call 111 tomorrow and try to get a scan. I’m trying to be cool about it but I’m finding it all quite stressful….

OP I can see how this would worry you. Would you try 111 tonight? I'm not sure how it works but I'd have thought better to get advice sooner.

@Warmlight1 I am so tired I didn’t sleep well last night so I think I’m going to go to bed now. I think I’ll ring them in the morning, just not sure what they can do this early on…

Hope you are ok @pinkdolphins

@Warmlight1 thank you. I’m still brown spotting intermittently. I was at the EPU today, they saw a sac and yolk but no heartbeat. They said that’s normal at this point. Even me progesterone (as I MC before) and have another scan in 11 days. All I can do is wait…

Still thinking of you hoping all's ok. No need to update if you don't feel like it. Take care.

pinkdolphins · 15/10/2026 10:59

No I will update as I know it helps others to read.
The progesterone stopped the spotting which felt like a relief but last night I had a brief bright red bleed, no pain. So I’m off for scan tomorrow. TBH I feels pretty bleak as my last two kids pregnancies were super smooth. I’m trying to stay in a certain headspace but it’s hard…

Update. Good news which hasn’t really sunk in. Embryo with heartbeat confirmed…1cm, so they’ve given me 7w+3.
They can’t see why I bled but said it happens a lot. I just need to carry on with my progesterone until 16w.

@pinkdolphins I'm so glad for you, sending best wishes and congratulations. X

@pinkdolphins. Im glad all is ok. Can I just ask, are you prescribed progesterone? Im 35 abd have 3 children, no issues at all carrying them. Had a miscarriage at 23 weeks 5 days earlier this year and this week had a positive but 2 days later lost quite a lot if blood and its a chemical unfortunately. Im just wondering if my body us lacking progesterone.

pinkdolphins · 18/10/2026 18:11

@budster08 I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. They must’ve been terribly hard. Progesterone I believe only is needed before 16 weeks when the placenta isn’t full formed, after then it’s pointless to take progesterone.
not sure on stats but I would guess as we age we aren’t as good at producing hormones across the board… but that’s just a guess from me.

I got given them as I miscarried earlier this year.

@budster08 Tommy’s says: Major studies like the PRISM Trial provided progesterone up to 16 weeks because that was the protocol tested in clinical research. There is no clinical evidence that continuing progesterone past 16 weeks provides any added benefit against miscarriage.
