Unexpected pregnancy at five weeks and unsure whether to continue

Ive found out this week that I am pregnant. It wasnt planned. I'm roughly 5 weeks and I really dont know what to do..

Long post, so thank you for those who make it through.

Some background on my situation.. I have only been with my new partner for 11 months. We currently dont live together, although we have been discussing moving in together after Christmas.
I have 1 child from a previous relationship and my ex has been particularly difficult ever since we separated at the start of last year. I met my current partner 10 months after separating from my ex, so admittedly it was quite soon. But within a week of me following my new partner on social media (very soon after first meeting), my ex had quietly found him too, followed him, found his ex and followed her too. He was watching all their stories that they posted of their child. I found this out 2 weeks later as my partner noticed and realised who he actually was and naturally found it quite creepy and so blocked him.. my ex then came out and asked me who he was. It felt very stalker-ish behaviour. I didnt know at that point if the relationship would go anywhere, it was so new, and it felt to me like none of my exs business. But i told him. Anyway, from there my ex has been very difficult about the relationship. He believes he needs access to information about us "because we have a child together and so he has a right to know".. he has said on a number of occasions that he wants to meet the new guy to tell him what a horrible person I apparently am. Obviously just trying to come between us. Ive nothing to hide, but his attitude obviously puts me off wanting to introduce them.. hes also done other stuff, but you get the jist..

So as you can imagine, the "hoonymoon" stage of our relationship has been spoilt from the very start because of my ex. My new partner has been as understanding and supportive as he can be but it has definitely taken its toll on us and caused some arguments, and filled him full of caution. We expected things to settle down with my ex as the months passed, but no such luck..

And so now I find myself in a bit of a rubbish situation, as I always wanted more than 1 child. The thought of giving my current child a sibling would make me feel complete. But naturally i would have liked to have been another 12 months into the relationship, living together and settled.. I do have some concerns about 1, whether I can financially afford a second child right now. I currently work reduced hours to save on childcare and my work is barely above minimum wage. 2, and the biggy really is how soon into our relationship it has happened, especially with all the rubbish going on with the crazy ex.. my new partner was honest with me and told me he is feeling 70% towards not going through with the pregnancy, 30% of that being financially, but 40% of hes feeling towards it is because of how my ex has been. This obviously hurt to hear as I completely understand his feelings, yet I feel like im at a loss with how to fix the situation with my ex.
After the chat with my partner, i felt like i had no choice but to terminate, given the circumstances.. I phoned the abortion clinic and they are posting the tablets out to me, but I just feel so guilty and sad about the idea of going through with the termination. Im 36, so what if this is my last chance to give my child a sibling.. but my current situation isnt ideal. I feel so lost on what to do. I feel like i dont have much time to decide either.

I dont know what im looking for with this post. But perhaps some honest opinions of what others would do in my situation.. am I listening to my heart over my head?

You always have a choice and it has to be one you're comfortable living with.

It's possible things with your new partner might not work out and you'll be a single mum of 2 children or it's possible it will and you'll have a blended family with tricky dynamics at times.

If I were you I'd take more time to decide as you can't take such a final decision back no matter how much you might want to.

I can't comment on what I'd do in your situation as I don't have enough details about your circumstances. Speak to a counsellor before making any decisions.

Thank you for replying.
Yes, this is true. I am going to take a little more time to consider all options. I never thought id be in this situation. Ive always been so careful and sensible with life choices. These past 2 years everything seems to have just fallen apart. I feel so confused about everything right now.

Didn’t want to read and run. I am in a somewhat similar position. Different circumstances but trying to work out what to do at 6 weeks! I feel I go between each option throughout the day and am really struggling with the fight between my heart and head. A lot of forums say to do pro and cons list and I probably should but am somewhat burying my head in the sand. Apologies it’s probably not helpful but hopefully helps knowing someone else is navigating the same conundrum

There's a lot of talk about men in your post for a decision that has nothing to do with any of them. What do you want?

Thank you for replying. Sorry to hear that you find yourself in a similar situation.
It feels like the biggest decision of my life and there's too much noise around me right now to think things through clearly to make a decision. I feel very much the same as you in burying my head. Im sure whichever decision you make, as difficult as the choice is, will be the right one for you In the long term x

I find this a bit of a bizarre response if im honest as I feel like it has everything to do with my partner, whom helped create this pregnancy and will be equally responsible for the financial and emotional upbringing of the baby. His feelings on the matter are very important to me. Id never want to force him into a situation he wasnt comfortable by being selfish with my choice. Its for life. And then the ex situation was relevant as he is making my life chaos at the moment. All factors I need to consider before bringing another innocent life into the mix.

I think you need to separate having another baby and whether the baby's father is a keeper as a life partner. It sounds quite likely that the relationship will not last, so in that event do you still want his baby?

PeasePuddingPottage · 02/10/2026 22:42

It's a difficult situation. And you do have some time before not having a baby. But don't rush into anything. Don't be pressured by anyone else. You can access free neutral advice and counselling via bpas. Just make sure it's your choice x

This is a fear of mine too if im honest. I do see him as my life partner, im just afraid he doesn't see me that way because of all the hassle my ex has caused. If the shoe was on the other foot I genuinely dont think I would have been able to stay with someone who had a crazy ex. I just wish I had a way of fixing that particular issue and everything else would be fine.

@ThatLilacTigeri think she meant your focusing on the men in your post. Instead of your child and your pregnancy.

FunPartyIdeas · 02/10/2026 22:46

@ScarletDreams You say the pregnancy was unexpected, so guessing you were taking precautions to avoid it? I do totally appreciate contraception can fail (it's happened to me and what a complete shock!)

@ScarletDreams
It turns your world around when that happens, I get that. I fell pregnant quite soon after my husband's vaesectomy, but also taking the pill absolutely correctly. My last pregnancy (won't obviously have any more), but decisions were taken away from us as it was ectopic.
I hope you find peace with whatever decision you reach.
