Early scan - only sac and yolk no embryo

Hi there,

I had an early scan this week and a couple issues came up:

  1. I thought I was 7w/7w+1 but the sonographer said I was measuring 6w+2. Dating is a little tricky as I got pregnant in the cycle after a miscarriage but we were tracking (BBT and Lh strips) so I was fairly confident as to when I ovulated.
  1. The scan only showed a sac and yolk, no embryo. The sonographer said this can be normal and has arranged for another scan next week.

I was really upset after the scan. I had a feeling something was wrong as my symptoms seemed to subside and the scan results just seemed to confirm what I suspected. My partner however came away feeling positive as the sonographer gave the impression there was nothing to worry about. I can't help feeling like we need to prepare ourselves - a combination of off-dates and no embryo can't be good signs.

Does anyone have any experience of this and if so, any tips on getting through the next week? Finding it really hard to think of anything else.

This does sound like it could just be early. I had a blighted ovum before and there was no yok.

this week will be tough but hopefully goes quicky for you x

When did you first get a positive test? What date?

@CrappyBottle Very faint positive on 29th August, got stronger over next few days with very strong positive on 4th September

Hey. I went though similar this time last year, well August 25. I got a faint positive and then 1-2 weeks on clear blue on 5th August (similar dates to you just the month before). The clear blue weeks went up each week and so I booked a private scan in on 27th August when I believed myself to be around 7.5 weeks. The scan was a whole other story as they said it was twins and alsorts (which it wasn’t-queue a later complaint to meet your miracle) but what was also apparent is that there was a sac and yolk to be seen but no fetal pole. I was confident in my dates and knew then that things didn’t seem right but tried to stay positive. I called the local EPAU and got in the following week and when there was still no fetal pole a week later I just knew it wasn’t good. I looked for every positive story going and even posted on here but deep down my gut knew. This wasn’t my first rodeo I’d had three children prior and needed early scans for all, so I know what to expect. I very much protected my heart. I was back and forth for around 3 weeks before the miscarriage started as EPAU asked me to go back 10 days later, and then the sonographer thought she saw the flicker of a fetal pole so made me wait another week which is when the miscarriage then started. They called it a missed miscarriage. It was a really crappy time and I also had a chemical a few months later but am now happy to say I’m 26 weeks into a healthy pregnancy. Sorry that was long I just wanted to give a real honest view of a similar scenario and how it went for me in the same breath I’m really hoping that perhaps your dates are not as they seem and something will show up next week ☺️

With a positive test on 29th August you can’t be any less than 7w today (so possibly just over 6 weeks depending on what day you had the scan this week). So it’s POSSIBLE you are earlier than you thought. Was the scan internal? Normally by 6-7w you can see a fetal pole and by 7w you definitely can see a heartbeat. But there are stories online where they haven’t at this stage but then it’s fine later. All you can really do at this point is wait. I’ve had a few early scans and measured behind. For me they have always ended in missed miscarriages. Some resolved naturally and others I had surgery. I would stay cautious if I were you just in case. But you are kind of on that borderline where you could just be too early.
