Pelvic gurdle pain?

Has anyone had this and can tell me what it's like and how to help myself?
My midiwfe says its this, however my consultant said as I've got 3 large ovarian cysts, a fluid filled tube, baby pushing them more central over my cervix area it could actually be these causing my pain.

I've had it almost 2 weeks now and im 35 weeks along. I'm fine sitting down and can stand up ok, but as soon as I go to lift a foot its excruciating and I can't lift enough to take a step. I have to just stand here rocking slightly til its eased enough to move.
The only way I can describe it, and sorry as this is awful.... I feel like someone has a hand either side of my vagina, inserted their fingers for grip and then tries to pull me apart. Nobody will refer me for help/physio as they can't agree on what's causing the pain. I'm on a strong painkiller but I'm still in agony. Once I get moving it does ease enough for me to go about my day, but as soon as I sit down for longer than 10 mins, I'm absolutely screwed again when I get up 😢

Hey that sounds so painful i'm so sorry you are going through that.

I had PGP in my first pregnancy and the things I found worse were walking, as you describe it took a while for the pain to ease on standing and for me to get going. I walked a lot less in my pregnancy than I wanted to, and a lot more slowly because of the pain. The other thing that aggravated it was anything that seemed to over extend the hip on one side - weight bearing or standing on one leg e.g to put on underwear or trousers so I did that sitting down. Getting out of a car - to go from sitting to standing I had to bring my knees together and swivel round on my bottom and pull myself up so as not to weight bear on one leg only.

I was given some stretches to do with a resistance band which helped and I made sure not to do anything on one leg if I could avoid it.

Could you look up some physiotherapy exercises online and give them a go? That's very unhelpful of your doctor/midwife not to refer you. Where I live you can self refer to a first contact physiotherapist at my GP practice - is anything like this available to you?

I hope you get some relief soon xx

Thank you for the reply! That does sound very similar to my pain. I'm generally ok on my right side but any kind of movement/foot lifting on my left sends pain shooting straight through the left side of me, so things like dressing as you mentioned are getting difficult. I can get in and out of a car ok, but if I'm lay in bed on my left side and try to push myself up to turn over, i again get the pain shoot through that side.
I'm honestly sick of no one helping. I'm already on morphine long term anyway which I'm really conscious about with being pregnant, yet the most advice I've been offered is to up my dose and throw in some co codamol as well!!
I'm fairly certian from your description it is PGP and not the mess I have going on inside. I'll get on amazon now and order a band and look up some exercises to try. I'm not sure about the self referral at my GP, no one has mentioned this as an option to me but they are only up the road so I can pop in and ask at least. Thank you for your suggestions 🙂

I have this for this pregnancy but never had in my previous one. My pain is bearable but usually very bad when I lay down and get up, in particular in the morning. Lifting lefts to put on a stool is very bad too.

my physio did tell me to get a belt, apparently it helped a lot of people but didn’t for me. She did gave me some exercises where you go on 4 and inhale and exhale while tuck in your tummy. Not sure how helpful that is, i did it for a while and the pain is just not getting worse but still there.

I have PGP, I was (luckily!) able to self-refer for physio. They gave me exercises to do and a tubigrip to wear over my bump which I'm finding really helpful, if you can get a support band? Also do you sleep with a pillow between your legs? I had it between my thighs but physio said to have it between my knees going down to my ankles, that's helping, as is sitting/gently rocking on a birthing ball - posture also a big part. It sucks, so sorry you're struggling x

Whowhatwhere21 · 25/09/2026 10:05

This is my 3rd, my other two are 15 and 18 though so its been a while. I never had anything like this though in previous pregnancies.
Someone else mentioned a support band for bump to me but I honestly wasn't sure if it was worth it. I don't have much of a bump for a band to support so I don't know if one of these would be of any use when there is nothing there for the band to sit under and support.
I have tried pillows, it makes me worse. If I go to open my legs slightly to put a pillow in between, the pain is excruciating, once I manage to get the pillow in place I'm still in the same amount of pain. I have to keep them fully closed together when lying down otherwise I am crying from how bad it hurts.
If I'm sitting or standing though its the opposite, I end up suffering if they are fully closed.
Birthing ball may be a good shout! I was in hospital over the weekend and couldn't get comfy on the bed so i just sat rocking away on a ball, it was probably the comfiest I have felt in a long time! X

Sorry to hear this OP, I had PGP throughout pregnancy and it was a nightmare. Very poor of your GP not to refer for physio, although I had physio and am unsure it really helped much. I did get some relief with a belt so it could be worth a go. I just found moving extremely slowly and supporting my back with a cushion when sitting especially on a soft surface like a sofa helped. I know it's not much use to you currently but the MINUTE I gave birth the pain totally went away.

SKLM · 25/09/2026 12:17

@Whowhatwhere21 hey OP. I forgot to mention I also had a birthing ball which gave me a lot of relief. Do you think you might go back to the GP again? The amount of pain you are in sounds horrible and really worrying for you xx
