my midwife told me I had slightly low b12, but it’s 67ng/L which according to dr google is dangerously low? Does anyone know about b12 levels? Now really worried about the baby.
I will call the doctor in the morning but does anyone know about the levels and what level the nhs treat a deficiency?
thanks for any advice.

Is that what the test says ? 67? I’d be very surprised if it was that low and your midwife has declared it ‘slightly low’

Hello, mine was 114 at the start of my pregnancy and I was treated immediately with 6 injections over the space of 2 weeks, and then one injection every 3 months after that. I think you should definitely challenge the midwife’s view that 67 is a ‘bit low’ as my results (NHS) said under 180 is confirmed B12 deficiency. The fact you are pregnant makes it more important to get this treated but I would try not to worry too much about impact on baby so far - hopefully if this was only picked up now, it’s a recent development and if all else looks well with baby, try not to worry. But definitely insist on treatment - it is totally safe and recommended during pregnancy for both you and baby. Good luck!

When I was pregnant, my B12 was 49 and I had to go for a series of B12 injections followed by B12 tablets for the remainder of the pregnancy when my levels had come up a bit (they improved with the injections but I was still deficient). It was the midwife who arranged this though. Didn’t impact baby at all, I was just KNACKERED. Not sure what the ranges are as I think it’s a bit different in pregnancy but hopefully your doctor can advise

Thank you that is reassuring. The midwife isn’t sure about it all, she said she has emailed the hospital team to see what they say about it, she says all she can see is that the cut off for treatment is 70ng/l which means I would just be slightly low. So I am hoping it’s just on a different scale. I did read up on Active vs total b12 and apparently Active has a different scale, but is normally recorded in pmol/L and total is normally ng/L so I don’t know.
all it says is ‘Vit B12 - 67ng/l’ it doesn’t have any other information. So I guess I just wait and see what the hospital say and hope it’s not as bad as it seems.
