how quickly can the cervix thin out?

I'm 39 weeks. I had a stretch and sweep today but my cervix is still 1.5cm thick. I've now got period aches coming regularly with tightenings but surely this can't be the real thing as it would take longer for my cervix to thim out for real contractions to start??? I was 2 cm dilated but this is 3rd pregnancy so that is quite normal.

Anyone know whether this could be the real thing or just braxton hicks (which I didn't think you could feel)????

TIA

The contractions help your cervix to thin too, not just dilate.

I was 4-5 cms when I went in to be induced with my second but my cervix was still high and long, labour only took 3 hours though.

So yes, it could be the real thing.

Forgot the at the end. It seems a bit blunt without it, sorry!

why did you have a sweep at 39 weeks?

it is a how long is a piece of string question!

lots of sex and nipple stim can help, or have a bath, relax and wait to see, you'll know soon enough if it is the real thing...

if it is going to work, you will labour within 48 hours

I wondered that lulu, I had to wait until 41 weeks .

i had cholestasis with first 2 pregnancies and it's only just starting to rear it's ugly head now so it's a case of 'race against time' whether thay cab get me to go naturally or they'll induve me all depends on bood results i get tomorrow so keeping my fingers crossed it happens naturally and soon as last 2 labours were horrible.

Thanks

i hope that things do get moving for you and you have a straighforward labour

nannyjo · 30/06/2008 20:17

sorry me again!!

After the stretch and sweep yesterday i had waves of period type pains right through to this morning. Now I just have a constant period/dull ache pain but is getting quite uncomfortable but it is definitely not coming in waves or peaks.

Should I do anything or just stop being such a paranoid impatiant worrier??

sorry, had not seen this! any more news, or you birthing?!

could be pre labour, if you lose bloody mucus, that can be more indicative of dilation/effacement of the cervix

good luck x
