HG anti-sickness medication causing constipation and bloating in pregnancy

Hi everyone, I’m hoping some other mums might have experienced something similar and have some advice. I have HG.

I’ve now tried 2 different anti-sickness medications. They both seem to work really well for stopping the actual sickness, BUT after only taking 2 tablets I become incredibly bloated and uncomfortable and I can’t seem to poo properly. I end up with quite a lot of pain and feel like everything is just backed up.

When I stop taking the tablets, the constipation/bloating does improve, but then the horrible sick taste in my mouth comes back and I either feel like I’m going to be sick or actually throw up. The taste is especially awful and seems to make the nausea much worse.

Has anyone else experienced this with anti-sickness medication during pregnancy? Did you find a particular medication that didn’t cause the constipation, or anything that helped with the horrible sick/metallic taste in your mouth?

Also, what would you suggest I ask my GP about? I’m worried I’m going to end up stuck between being able to stop the vomiting but being in pain and unable to poo, or stopping the tablets and being constantly nauseous/sick.

Any advice or experiences would be really appreciated ❤️

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ awww I feel you, I’m 17 weeks now and finally stopped taking the tablets.

I think the bloating/constipation is part of the first trimester but not helped by the meds and I personally ate a lot of carbs even when I didn’t feel sick for safety 😂. (I looked and felt bigger then, than I am now and before any meds) anyhow I got prescribed Lactulose which is like a sugary syrup Medicine from the Drs. Which did help for going more regularly and also renees tablets for bloating.

I took 4 weeks off work and got sick notes because I was miserable. Really feel you, it just feels uncomfortable all the time but it does get better! Right now is surviving but not thriving, sorry!

Hey OP. Sorry to hear you are suffering. Which medication have you been given? Some are worse for constipation than others. Ondansetron is known to cause constipation quite badly. You could try buying some lactulose over the counter to ease things? A pharmacist should be able to advise x

It can be hard to find an anti sickness medication that helps and once you do you might be reluctant to change it, but if you haven't tried it I am finding Xonvea very helpful. In my first pregnancy I wasn't offered it and struggled between promethazine and ondansetron.

Have you been offered omeprazole? Some of the horrible taste you get can be due to acid reflux which can start early in pregnancy, something like omeprazole or gaviscon might also help the symptoms. Don't be afraid to go back to your GP xxx

Hi love.
Lactulose or movicol first.
Docusate - 2 x 3 daily to get you going at least. Then you can wean it down if you need to. It's more gentle so once the blockage is gone it's easier

50ml of apple juice every 50 mins to keep hydrated and get it moving. If you do t drink the poo won't move and you'll be more sick.
Plus omeprazole definitely.
My youngest is 5 so it's a distant memory but still leaves me shuddering
I think I survived on crisps and potato waffles.
Good luck and sending love. It's worth it eventually.
