Hey,

First time poster so I apologise if there is no point to this thread but I need to get it all out of my head.

To start, I’m an anxious person. Years of being medicated for anxiety and I know a lot of this worry will be the anxiety talking.

Long story short. I’m 36 years old and lost close to 20 stone to have fertility treatment. We had to pay as didn’t qualify for NHS treatment and use a sperm donor as we found out my husband has azoospermia.

First IUI ended in miscarriage at 6 and a half weeks, next 3 failed and now I’m 4 and a half weeks pregnant on our 5th round.

End of June 2026 I had a swab for routine fertility tests and was diagnosed with BV. I was given a course of Metronidazole and took them. Then last week I stupidly decided to take a home PH test which strongly showed BV was still there. I had to persuade the GP to do another swab, and they did confirming the BV was still there. He prescribed me the antibiotics again telling me they were safe but after speaking to EPAU they said I should use the gel form instead. Now reading online it seems to strongly suggest you shouldn’t use any form of Metronidazole even the gel.

I feel sick. I know whatever I do if something happens I’ll blame myself. I know I should use the gel as I’ve been told it’s ok to, but I am anxious with worry. I can’t put into words how much this baby already means to me. How much we’ve been through to get to this point.

Like I say, not sure the point of this post but don’t feel I have anyone to talk to. Only my husband and I know, and he’s the most relaxed person ever.

Hi, I can only tell you my personal experience. I had BV during pregnancy too. To start with GP thought it was Trush, gave me a cream to use inside, then it didn’t clear up. I went back to GP, she did a swab and it was BV. She gave me antibiotics to use,
which helped with BV. However I don’t know if that was something to do with it (I did think at the time) but I had a miscarriage 😞 That’s my own experience. Good luck! Hopefully everything will be fine xx

Metronidazole is fine. Untreated BV can cause problems.

I had endless prescriptions for thrush pessaries during pregnancy. It just kept coming back and then was prescribed oral antibiotics. Don’t stress yourself out. Like people above said, it’s best to treat it.
