When were you offered induction for gestational diabetes and a large baby?

Diagnosed with gestational diabetes at almost 37 weeks pregnant, this is due to baby measuring 8 pound 5 at 36 weeks and then testing my blood sugar for a week.

I am diet controlled but still getting some high numbers which I will discuss at my next appointment.

My question is - When did you get offered induction for gestational diabetes? With a big baby especially and how big was baby predicted? Not sure what to expect at my 38 weeks appointment.

*im aware that growth scans can be inaccurate this late. This is not my first child and my others have been on the larger side too with growth scans being pretty accurate.

I was with dc2. I did at 38 weeks she was 7lb 13 and it was fine. Dc3 I was tested whenever they test I think 20 something weeks. It came back fine and I was told that was it I wouldn’t to be tested again I didn’t have it. Which was pretty stupid really as they didn’t pick it up til 34 weeks with dc2.
i was huge and was went in to be induced for really bad PGP I could barely walk.
Dc3 came out weighing 10lb 8. I definitely had undiagnosed GD he was a right pudding no wonder I couldnt walk!

Thank you for your reply @troppibambini6 Why did they induce at 38 weeks? Was it purely for gestational diabetes or other reasons too x

No just for the GD. I had lots of water as a symptom which put me at a higher risk of cord prolapse if my waters went naturally. They thought she would be quite big but it was more the water issue.

To be fair it was absolutely fine and I actually preferred it to my first “natural” birth. I felt very well looked after it was very controlled.

39+4 They refused to do it prior to 39 weeks due to worries about breathing difficulties with baby

I had GD, had a planned c section at 38 weeks. No worries due to size of baby, she was 50th centile on scans and that was accurate when she came out. But they were worried about the placenta failing early as GD means there's something not working with it. I was on insulin though it couldn't be managed through diet. I imagine different hospitals have different policies.

Thanks everyone. I’ve now been put on medication for this but I am 38 weeks this week so not sure what will happen z

I was diagnosed with GD earlier than you and it couldn’t be managed. Baby was big and I’m only small so they booked induction for 37 weeks exactly! Induction went really well, baby was born vaginally weighing 10lb 1!

I was diagnosed at 28 weeks and baby was consistently measuring on the 90th percentile. This was mainly due to her stomach measuring large each scan.

I was diet controlled and told an induction was likely at 39 weeks, in the end this happened at 39+5 and ended in an emergency c section for me. Overall though was a good experience ( I am based abroad though so didn't give birth using the NHS)

Oh this is interesting. How big was baby measuring at growth scans? Was this on the NHS.

I have my first appointment with the diabetes consultant this week and another scan but just not sure what to expect

Induced at 39 weeks because I had started metformin as my sugars readings weren't controlled no matter how strict my diet was. Baby was 7lb.

I had growth scans every week from about 31/32 weeks. He was predicted to be ‘big’ from before my GD test because I was measuring big and we paid for a 4d scan and she was amazed how big he looked!

All my care was with the NHS and are for me they did! I think I had two weeks trying to control it through diet but readings were sky high every time I ate anything!
