Should I be doubling my folic acid with twins?

My midewife doesn't know and has told me to call the doc which I did about 5 hours ago but they still haven't got back to me. Any ideas please?

I doubt it.

hannah001 · 26/06/2008 17:08

I didn't.

The other question you could ask them is that if they don't know, does it do any harm to double the dose.

Have you tried ringing NHS Direct? 0845 46 47 (I know that looks too short, but it's right). They have midwifes in the call centre.

I have a feeling that too much folic acid is bad. Mine was upped a little when I had hyperemisis as I wasn't keeping any food down at all, and I think it's assumed that you get a bit from food as well as supplements.

I googled "Folic Acid Twins" and found out that taking folic acid whilst TTC ups your likelyhood of having twins!

No !
Would you double your diet ?

ScaryHairy · 26/06/2008 22:58

Folic acid is water soluble and you pee out what your body doesn't need. The Zita West ante natal vit range contain twice the dose of folic acid recommended in pregnancy, so the conclusion I have reached is that taking more does no harm.

Thanks for your responses. I've just got a call from the doc and they have prescribed me a high dose of folic acid that you can only get on perscription. As i'm 8 weeks I only need to take it for another 4 weeks (like normal then).

Just a note, I have always been told to take folic acid till 13 weeks, not 12.

as 13 weeks is actully when the 2nd trimester starts.

pregnantpopcornprincess · 27/06/2008 09:56

litterbug - I will ensure that I do! thanks for that

I was just thinking about this again - and realised most twin pregnancies probably don't - as you don't tend to find out you're carrying twins till your first scan - which isn't usually til the end of the first trimester anyway.

Not that it matters... just thinking
