12 weeks pregnant, UTI and antibiotics need a hand hold

Hello, I really need a hand hold. I'm 12 +2 pregnant and have had nausea and retching since week 6 but I felt it was possibly starting to get a little better and come in waves. Extreme fatigue and other symptoms. I've now got a UTI and antibiotics for 7 days called and I swear the antibiotics have made nausea and fatigue a million times worse. I know it need treating and I've taken two full days. I don't wanna any scare stories, just people who have felt like this in my position and it gets better. I'm sure once I finish antibiotics it will be better and hopefully the second trimester will bring some ease. Any kind words?

I had exactly this in my second pregnancy. 11 weeks in the nausea finally started to subside then I got a UTI and antibiotics and the nausea came back for another week. I felt better once the antibiotics were finished. Is it nitrofurantoin by any chance? I'd never had that antibiotic before so not sure if it really didn't agree with me or whether the pregnancy was just making it worse!

Yes that is the antibiotic I'm taking. I've never taken it before either but I feel way worse since I started taking it. I normally have amoxicillin. Did you feek better once you stopped taking it?

Yep felt fine as soon as the antibiotics were over!

I can't wait for Thursday! Where you taking the same as me? Do you mind me asking what your side effects were?

Yeah the nitrofurantoin. If I remember rightly it just made the nausea come back but that was it really.

Bless you I had a lot of utis with my first. I felt they always made me feel worse, and the antibiotics weren't great, but once the infection was gone I felt noticably better. UTIs make everything feel much worse! Are you taking anything for the sickness? x

No I haven't taken anything yet as I'm also taking sertraline for anxiety so I'm scared of taking too much. Although I know there will be something I can take. At the moment I'm eating ginger biscuits and wearing anti nausea bands 🤢 did antibiotics make you feel really sick and debilitating fatigue? Thank you for responding too x

@MyUmberSheep I take medications for mental health including fluoxetine which is in the same group as sertraline. My GP has always been really reassuring that anti sickness is safe, a lot of them are old and there is loads of data on them. They won't harm the baby and they were not concerned about drug interactions. There are a range of them available. Don't suffer in silence with the sickness xx

Yes UTIs always make me want to go to bed. Reassuringly though I think some of the heavy fatigue is trimester 1 related. I am 18 weeks pregnant with my second and by about 14/15 weeks things like boating and fatigue have really really settled down and I am less sick xx

Thank you so much for this. I got up this morning and thought "I may MAY be turning a slight corner as I didn't feel quite as sick and a tiny improvement on fatigue. Within one hour of taking antibiotic I'm puking everything up 😔 I'll see how I go with tonight's dose. I have my 12 week scan tomorrow so I'll speak to the nurses or doctor about it. Hopefully I will finish these bloody awful antibiotics Thursday morning. The nausea and sickness came more in waves before, but the antibiotics have made it so much worse! This is the worst sickness since week 6 so I'm thinking it's the antibiotics (or at least the severity of it). What antibiotics and anti sickness were you taking?x

@MyUmberSheep I was given either cefalexin or nitrofurantoin. The annoying thing about being pregnant is you need the 7 day course so i think the side effects are a bit worse and longer!

I went through several anti sickness medicines with my first pregnancy. Of what was offered to me I found promethazine the most helpful, cyclizine did nothing and ondansetron made me very constipated. This time round have been given Xonvea and it is so so so much better.
For me it has worked wonders and has allowed me to function again as daily vomiting was making me feel wretched.. definitely have a conversation with someone about it, you never know it might really help xx

I'm going to speak to the hospital when I go in the morning. This is my first pregnancy. Does it get better into the second trimester?x

I'm just desperate to know these awful side effects both worse mentally low and physical get better once I finish this antibiotic 😞
