Trying to conceive at 38 with changing cycles and ovulation timing

TTC and I'm 38. Are my chances low?
I have a 9 year old already and have been Ttc for 6 months which I know isn't a long time but things are different now with my cycle and hormonally I feel different!

My periods only seem to last 2 to 3 days and some cycles are 26 days, one in June was 32 days. I'd always been 28 spot on until about 12 months ago.

I'm looking into some fertility tests just to check my eggs, have bloods but they are costly, so saving up.

Anyone got any tips or advice? Is having a 2 to 3 day period bad, I'm struggling to know roughly when I'm ovulating because my cycle is all over the place.

Is there anything more I can do to improve our chances.

Thanks in advance x

Hi, OP

I have 2-3 day periods, mine reduced after my first baby. I've had two other children since, one at 37. 5 and one recenty in April, l turn 40 in October.

Could you do a progesterone test? It will show if you are ovulating.

I also used Clearblue ovulation tests, the advanced ones. They are expensive but honesty it took the guessing out of it. I never got the hang of the Premom strips.

I would start taking folic acid if you haven't already and vitamin D.

Try tracking your ovulation. I've used both the clear blue advanced digital and pre mom ovulation tests. I conceived my first on the first cycle with the clear blue digital. I used clear blue again when trying for my second but i noticed after my first pregnancy (and maybe age - 39 and 17 weeks pregnant with second now) that my periods had become very irregular and my cycles had gone from 30 to over 40 days. The clear blue digitals were predicting my ovulation time incorrectly every month as I was having two LH surges and ovulating later on the second one. Having more than one surge in a cycle seems to confuse the digital tests. So after 4 months I used the basic pre mom strips and that first cycle with them caught my lh surge correctly and fell pregnant. All going well.

That's just my experience of ovulation tests. I think there is some discussion on line about clear blue working better for regular cycles. I loved the simplicity of them. The pre mom strips are a faff but if you use them every day and closely track using their free app, I find they are a very cheap and helpful tool. Clear blue are very pricey especially if it is taking you a bit longer to conceive.

Previous poster mentioned progesterone tests too. I haven't tried this but I hear they are good for proving that ovulation has occurred which might be reassuring if your cycles are a bit irregular.

Good luck :) :) xx

My daughter wouldn't be here if if not have used the Clear blue ovulation test ... the purple one and not the pink one. The purple one was very accurate and I got pregnant on month 2 age 40.
