New appointment with general obstetric

Hi everyone,

I went to the hospital a couple days ago because of persistent very painful pain under the right rib. My blood pressure was normal but the midwife said I had 3+ protein in my urine.

Today I got notified of a new appointment next week at the general obstetric antenatal clinic. I have never had an appointment to there, and the scheduled appointments after that are just in my regular clinic.

I’m a bit concerned. Has anyone had the same? What does that mean?
Could it be pre-eclampsia despite normal blood pressure? What happens if it? Baby will only be 33 weeks old at the appointment.

thank you so much

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

You can just ring an ask.

I can't think of any other aspect of healthcare where unexplained appointments just pop up and you're expected to turn up completely uninforme. I don't understand why they think its ok to do this with maternity.

(If they suspected preeclampsia I don't think they'd leave it a week though so try not to worry)

I rang back and they couldn’t tell me the reason, they just said that a consultant requested it but didn’t make any comments so they didn’t know.

it is reassuring to hear they wouldn’t leave it a week if they had concerns and it’s likely something else

I woke up in massive pain, it feels like I’m going in labour but I’m not. My back, particularly my spine burns and my stomach is so sore. I can’t go back to sleep. I bought a BP machine for home but my BP is normal.im not sure what to do, I feel like I can’t bear this pain for another 8 weeks or so :((

Get checked over. You can develop HELLP syndrome without having high blood pressure.

Worriedallthetime123 · 21/07/2026 03:47

Could be a UTI? Would get checked out ASAP to rule out anything preeclampsia related.

mxfd · 21/07/2026 04:19

Firstly Call maternity triage and go and get checked now for new symptoms. It could be a UTI

re your appointment it could just be an appointment with a consultant to talk through birth options or if you have any risk factors on your booking in forms ( bmi, age, previous pregnancy issues ) this might have just flagged you need an appointment, I don’t think they would leave it a week if you have pre eclampsia

im waiting to be seen right now

update, if anyone is feeling the same as me and wants reassurance - all is well.
Protein could have been from contamination and high protein is apparently only of concern when BP is high.
Rib pain is due to baby being breeched and lodged right under my ribs.
not sure about the stomach and back pain though or blurry vision but all seemed okay

I'm glad you're ok. I had HELLP syndrome with similar symptoms which is why I was concerned about you.

I hope you and baby are okay now. I’m sorry to hear that, it must have been a very scary situation to be in

I’m so glad you got checked out! I sympathise massively on the rib pain! I was plagued! It’s the most horrendous pain . I found a heat pad alternated with ice packs really helped

EvelynBeatrice · 21/07/2026 19:32

Could you have gallstones? They’re often missed in pregnancy and new mums. An ultrasound could diagnose.

Worriedallthetime123 · 21/07/2026 20:11

Glad you are ok! Sounds like it has been quite scary but good to get checked out and know all is well
