Hospital transfer

We are moving areas soon. When in pregnancy is too late transfer hospitals? Would it be better to stick with your existing hospital for continuity if you end up being over 60 minutes away from it by car (probably 60-90 minutes)?

You need to discuss this with your midwife.

I would prioritise a shorter drive, if you get sent back home in early labour that’s a very long round trip.

How far along will you be when you move?

You'll need to self refer as soon as you can as they'll probably want to book you in all over again if it's a different trust. (In my experience)

I transferred at 24 weeks. I waited until I had my 20 week scan as that was under a hospital with a leading fetal medicine unit, and then transferred across to my nearest decent one to where we moved to (my nearest one was shit so traveled a bit further to get to it, but not as far as the original hospital!).

It would be between 22-30 weeks (timings still tbc).

I would just transfer to a closer hospital, not like you’re moving really close to due date. You never know how quickly you’d need to get there. I wouldn’t want to be travelling 90 mins in labour, 20 was hard enough!

Plenty of time I would just refer to the new hospital. I think I was about 26/28 weeks when I did mine

@FlyingdolphinsOh so that’s not too late? I had read elsewhere that 28 weeks is a cut-off for accepting transfers at some hospitals?

Totally agree! Nearly had DC2 in the car.

I'd do your best to transfer. Towards the end of pregnancy I ended up with quite a few midwife appointments. I also didn't want to drive very far, as was uncomfortable.

Well maybe it depends on the trust? But there's nothing to stop you ringing and talking them to about it....
