Constant rib and back pain

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had very painful rib pain in pregnancy? If so, did anything you do relieve it?

This is my third pregnancy, I had painful ribs with my second but it was manageable, but this time around it’s sooo painful it becomes unbearable and early contraction painful at times.

It’s been going on for two weeks. I went to get it checked two weeks ago, they said everything looked normal. I called triage again a couple days ago because the pain isn’t going anywhere and it’s even becoming worse, they said couldn’t help me, that it was unlikely to be caused by pregnancy at this stage (32 weeks pregnant) and that it was probably gaz (which it isn’t, as even touching my ribs hurts) and to take gaviscon and paracetamol.

The pain keeps worsening and I’ve been sat crying not knowing that to do. The pain is also in my back too now.

It’s also constant and doesn’t go away

Any help much appreciated

Thank you so much

Yes I had this as well! Also pregnant with my third. From weeks 28-34 or so, it was horrendous and I was in tears constantly- it was so painful into my back/shoulder as well. Since it was mostly on my right side, I was checked for HELLP/preeclampsia many times. All results were negative, it was definitely rib pain. I’m now 36+3 and it’s gotten so much better in the last week! So hopefully the same will happen for you.

the only things that helped: a heating pad, prenatal massage, and stretches

Thank you so much, I just ordered a heating pad.

And I’m glad you’re better now!

I am pregnant with my second and having back and rib pain on one side, it comes and goes. After trying gaviscon etc and getting checked out by the doctor/midwife I decided to try a deep tissue massage. I went to someone who specialises in pre natal massage. It has really, really helped. Everything had got so tight and sore but she helped release a lot of it. If you think that might help I definitely recommend it x

Yes! I am currently 37+5 and run pain has plagued me since about 20 weeks. This is my second pregnancy and upon desperately googling my issues I realised I started a now archived Mumsnet post about rib pain in my last pregnancy. Have a google of rib flare. I’m pretty sure that’s what I’ve suffered with. I’m fairly short torso which I think makes rib pain even more common.

I’m currently surviving the evenings with hot water bottle and ice packs alternating

I had awful rib pain as my son’s feet were wedged under them and liked pushing on them, I went to an osteopath and she resolved it, and my dodgy knees and side pain. She said she wished I’d come as sooner as she could’ve prevented it.
