Should I be worried about movement stopping?

I’m 16 weeks pregnant. I have been feeling movement since 13 weeks, with last week it being strong enough that my husband could feel it each day with his hand on my tummy.

I’m now on my third day of having no movement at all. I also had cramps yesterday and the day before, which I haven’t had at all since extremely early pregnancy.

I know that many people don’t feel movement until much later, but it’s the fact that it’s a change in what’s usual for me and the addition of the cramps that’s niggling at me. I rang my midwife and she said it’s probably fine but to ring triage if I’m worried or if I experience spotting or pain - I then mentioned the cramps and she said again to ring triage if I’m worried.

Well, I am worried, but I worry a lot so I’m not sure whether that’s a good metric to judge anything by! I don’t know whether it’s really worth bothering triage for. It’s also an hour away if they ask me to come in, and I’d have to get my husband to leave work to look after our children. It seems like I’d be making a big fuss if it turns out to be nothing.

I suppose I wondered what others would do, or if anyone else had similar in that they felt regular movements very early which then stopped for a while?

Thanks all ❤️

I think any change like this you should seek medical advice.

Thanks @MrSchubertWhiskers - I suppose I feel like I did already seek medical advice but it’s just been left for me to judge depending on how worried I am. But I worry about so many things, I’d never be out of hospital if I went in every time I was worried Grin

I suppose, and it may sound horrible to say, I’m also thinking that if something has gone wrong at this early stage then they can’t really do anything anyway? I just don’t know whether I’m judging the situation properly

I would go to the pregnancy unit. Just to reassure yourself. Its a worrying time being pregnant x

Always go to be checked. Even if its nothing and all is well, they'd rather see you every day if youre worried than you not come and something be wrong.

I understand what it's like when you're a worrier, learning to recognise which of those worries is legitimate, but this is one of them. Hopefully everything is fine, but there is reason to suspect it may not be so you need to be checked out.

And yes, if the worst has happened they might not be able to do anything but they still need to know in case of future pregnancies.

You're in your second trimester, please seek a medical help

I would wait. The baby is so small at this stage, much more likely it has just moved into a different position. Feeling moment at 13 weeks is very early, they say only to monitor movement for 28 weeks in my trust.
Plus, as you say, there is not much they can do at this stage.
Maybe if you are still worried this evening go in then? Then you don’t have the extra complication of getting your husband back?

JackdawLaw · 16/07/2026 12:03

If you’re worried, ask to be checked ☺️ that’s what I would do. It’s likely baby has just moved to a different position, but as it’s a change for you and you’re concerned, know that you can ask for more checks and to be reassured.

Thanks everyone. I’m still not really sure, but I think I will ring triage shortly.

Tbh if you’re anxious, I would just ring now. What’s the benefit of waiting? It doesn’t sound like you’ll suddenly stop worrying. Whereas you could go to triage, be reassured and then if it happens again this early you’ll know the movements just aren’t regular get to track them. X

Great advice on the Kicks Count website. Always get a reduction in movement checked.

Teresa7 · 16/07/2026 17:17

I rang triage, and they don’t think I need to come in. If the cramps get worse I will ring back I think, but otherwise I’m going to put it out of my mind for now. Thanks all x
