I went in to get checked out as i thought i had gone into labour on monday night but it had all stopped and today hadnt felt baby move to much. They did some monitoring and all was ok with baby, i asked if the head was still engaged (At MW app 2 weeks ago it was 2/5), she said that she couldnt really feel the head, just the shoulders. Does this mean i am fully engaged???, she didnt write anything in my notes.

Im 38 weeks tomorrow do you think i will go into labour soon??? or is it just wishful thinking.

TIA

is it your first baby?

if she couldn't feel the head, it usually means it is fully engaged, ie all in your pelvis. so good news!!! (or an inexperienced midwife!)

NO 2nd, first one had lots of problems during pregnancy and then delivered at 38 weeks after waters breaking and going straight into labour, this pregnancy has so far been trouble free and have a felling labour will start completely differently as well.

I know 2nd babies arent supposed to engage or anything, although he has been down for many weeks and was definately engaged 2 weeks ago.

i dont think she was inexperienced, i had a student midwife try first and she couldnt tell, then another tried and asked the final midwife as she too couldnt be sure, the one that said she couldnt feel a head, made me lay flatter and had a good feel, so i think she was right, i also am feeling a lot of pressure down below, and like i said previously i was having contractions on monday night, wonder whether he dropped and thats what started it off.

I'm 38 wks tomorrow and it's my 2nd. MW said exactly the same to me that I was 2/5 engaged, i.e. 1-2/5's to go.

She had a student with her who tried to feel how engaged I am and she coudl only feel the shoulders, meaning most of the head is engaged.

To be honest, 2nd babies can dis-engage and re-engage, but it doesn't necessarily mean that your baby will. Some 2nd babies obviously engage early still as both mine and yours have.

Good luck with the birth and hope the rest of your pregnancy goes without a hitch x

I'm experiencing loads of pressure and been having constant contractions all day today, but it's just a waiting game...though it sounds like it's doingboth our heads in.

Mintpurple · 25/06/2008 19:22

As Cass said, if she couldnt feel the head its probably fully engaged at 0-1/5 and so is right in the pelvis.

It will give you quite a bit of pressure in the pelvis but does not necessarily mean that labour is imminent. Sorry! It can still come out of the pelvis a bit so dont be too disappointed if someone says next week - oh 2/5.

Thanks for your responses, am seeing the comm mw tomorrow for my 38 week check, so will see what she thinks.

I know babies can bob in and out, but to be honest i dont think that has happened, he has always been firmly head down, guess im just wishful thinking something will happen soon, but no beginning to hope that he holds on till next week, as have a very busy weekend with DS birthday and dont want to take that special time away from him.

SKETCHI - its definately doing my head in, was never very good at waiting!!!, ill keep my fingers crossed for you something happens soon.
