Bleeding whilst on aspirin

Hi guys. I’m just looking for some advice. I am 13 weeks and 6 days pregnant today. I’ve had a miscarriage previously at 12 weeks. I have been put on 150mg aspirin in this pregnancy and have been taking it since my 12 week scan which was at 12 weeks and 4 days. 12 week scan went perfectly and baby was healthy. Me and my husband had sexual intercourse last night and this morning I woke up to some brownish bleeding mixed with my discharge. My anxiety is already through the roof during this pregnancy due to my previous loss so this made it even worse. Has anyone had this happen to them before? And is this normal whilst being on aspirin? Please share your thoughts and advice.

Yes, happened to me! I was told to take aspirin as I was 40 when I was pregnant. At 15 weeks I woke up to a bleed and was terrified. Had a scan and all was perfect. After researching risk v benefit I stopped taking aspirin. That was just my personal choice in my circumstances on the basis that I suspected it caused the bleed and the aspirin advice was just a blanket thing they did for pregnancies 40 +. All was absolutely fine and my DD is 2 years old now. It’s really stressful OP, hope all is ok for you and you have an uneventful pregnancy

Thank you for your reply! I spoke to my local maternity unit and they said if it’s brown blood with no cramping then it’s nothing to worry about and will just be from cervical irritation. The bleeding has now stopped thankfully so praying everything will be okay!

That’s very reassuring. I also remembered the EPU said that hormones change rapidly at this stage too which can trigger a bleed. Pregnancy is a rollercoaster- I hope the anxiety isn’t too bad for you so you can enjoy it too ❤️

I can’t say my anxiety hasn’t been bad because that would be a lie but I’m just taking each day as it comes. My next scan is at 16 weeks which isn’t that far away so hoping I can hold on until then.

Definitely a sensible approach. Hope the scan goes well at 16 weeks

Can I ask how heavy your bleed was and what colour? Mine has turned into fresh red blood which is worrying. I’ve attached a picture of you can kindly have a look and let me know if yours was similar. Really stressed😭

Yes, mine was the same- it was red and probably slightly more than that. Mostly stopped after a day. I did have bleeding earlier on in pregnancy as well. Try not to panic (I know that’s easier said than done) but perhaps pop to the early pregnancy unit (my NHS Trust was EPU until 16 weeks), just for some reassurance. I also remembered that they gave me a cervical examination when I went in, just to check whether it was coming from there. I took comfort at the time from the statistics- I think it’s something like you have only a 3% chance of miscarriage in the second trimester. Hang in there

Thank you so much, this is very reassuring! I’m on my way to the emergency unit right now as that is what the gp advised. Hopefully they will do a scan to check if everything is okay.

Best of luck, deep breaths and hopefully you won’t have to wait too long as I know how excruciating that is. Keep me posted
