No heartbeat seen at 6/7 weeks, repeat scan pending to check - experiences?

Following a slight bleed at 7 weeks ish, we were bought in for an internal ultrasound to check things out. Everyone at the hospital/gynae had no real concerns about the bleed I'd had because it wasn't major or soaking through anything. The ultrasound doctor advised us she was unable to find a heartbeat, only the sac and yolk etc. We've been called back Monday next week to re assess just incase it's too early. Has anyone had a similar experience and a heartbeat has then been found? I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket with this next ultrasound but I could t really be told much else so I'd like some real life experiences

Kind of.. with my 1st I went for a private scan at 7 weeks and the same they could only see yolk and sac, they said to come back in two weeks but gave me information on miscarriage and go to a&e if bleeding etc, I went back two weeks later and all was fine they said I wasn’t as far along as I thought but I knew I was and by 12 week scan dates aligned.

Bakeycakes · 08/07/2026 19:12

Thank you for replying. That gives me some reassurance! That's exactly what they said they could see in my scan, she didn't use any words of miscarriage or anything only 'I know it's not really what you want to hear' and 1/5 are okay in the second scan. Trying to gauge my odds with Mumsnet users 😅

This happened to my SIL and my nephew is 21 now.

I’m sorry for what you’re going through, the uncertainty is really hard.

If you are sure of your dates, it’s unlikely to be good news if no heartbeat can be detected. However, like PP, if there’s any uncertainty about your dates, it might be that it’s just too early.

My first pregnancy was a MMC, I’d no symptoms at all until nearly 14 weeks but unfortunately the pregnancy had ended weeks before. As I’d no symptoms, they called me for a more detailed scan when the first less reliable scan didn’t identity a heart beat.

it’s really hard to say, keeping everything crossed for you. 🙏

Thank you xx fingers crossed! Kinda makes me regret going to the hospital earlier just incase I've got myself upset for nothing and it's just too early to see, but equally I think if I'd have been completely oblivious until my first scan in August i think I'd have been worse. Maybe this is the lesser of two evils if it is the case - or just a worry over nothing! Find out in our next episode of I don't know what's happening in my own body 🫠

Yes! I went for a scan at 6 weeks and was told there was no heartbeat yet but it looked too soon, foetal pole, sac etc, I was convinced it would be a miscarriage but no, everything was fine 2 weeks later and he’s 14 strapping lad now lol …. I’m a biologist by trade, and I’m certain some sperm live longer than the 5 days they suggest, I must have fallen pregnant almost 2 weeks after conception sex as my DH went abroad and I thought it was a long shot anyway,
but nope, all things worked out! Good luck and let us know!

Springcloud26 · 08/07/2026 21:11

I’m in similar position @Bakeycakes had a scan last week at what I thought was 6 + 4, but measured at 6 weeks - yolk sac but no fetal pole. Got a rescan on Friday and trying to keep positive!

I also wanted an earlier reassurance rather than waiting to know if something was wrong, it’s been the longest 10 days though!

Hope all goes well with yours, please keep us updated

Lucky you don’t have to wait too long to be rescanned. Fingers crossed for you xx

Fingers crossed for you too! I'm so undecided as to whether I'm doing it too soon and a little bit longer might help or make it worse. It's so conflicting!

Did they measure the sac and it was measuring 6/7 weeks or was it measuring under that?

DandelionClockSeeds · Yesterday 06:54

Yes, due to previous history, I needed early scans.
At 6+3 no hb. DS1 is now 17.
DS2 had a hb at 6+0.

Are you very sure of your dates? Do you think you are more like 6 weeks or 7 weeks because that could make a difference. Or could you even be less? When did you first get a positive test? Did they see a fetal pole or just a sac and yolk? Not seeing a heartbeat at 6 weeks can be common. Not seeing a heartbeat at 7 weeks is more concerning. I had IVF and was brought in for a viability scan at 7 weeks. They wouldn’t do any earlier as they said they can’t always see a heartbeat that early. But after 7 weeks if there isn’t one then they said they know it isn’t viable. But with IVF there’s much less room for error with dates like there is for natural conception.

Bakeycakes · Yesterday 08:49

I thought I was sure but now I'm doubting myself - They said it was measuring around 6 weeks. Natural conception - not IVF. They definitely saw the sac and yolk if I'm honest I can't remember what was said about the foetal pole - By that point she'd told me she couldn't see a heartbeat so my brain wasn't paying much attention

What was the date you first got a positive test?

What was the date you first got a positive test?

16th June - It was a dating test and showed 1-2 weeks

Allowing for an early positive you could well only just be over 6 weeks rather than 7. Obviously there’s no way to know for definite but it’s possible all could be ok. Hopefully the next scan will tell you more clearly.

Thank you xx

I don't know what I'd do without these forums. There's so much about pregnancy nobody tells you about which is apparently 'normal' as a starting point.
