Peonies12 · 01/07/2026 20:13

I only took folic acid and Vit D. Much better to get your nutrients from diet

Thank you everyone x

I agree! I have to confess though, my diet is terrible! Always been a picky eater. Did initially try to force some veg down me when I discovered I was pregnant but ended up heaving and gave myself stomach ache so I gave up 😭

American expat here, still figuring out the UK options after moving mid-pregnancy 😅 Back home I was on one with methylfolate and a decent iron level, so I've been hunting for something similar — currently on Pregnacare but not totally sure it's the best fit. What made you go with yours? Keen to learn from mums who've done this before me!

I think I only took folic acid and Vit D- just boots or supermarket branded ones. I eat well, but used to also take a multivitamin with iron, but it contained Vit A so I stopped that when pregnant. We TTC 12yrs in total, but I started the folic acid months before TTC. I did ask the IVF consultant about my concerns for taking it so long, but she said it was fine.

One thing to note if anyone is overweight, that you should be taking 5mg of folic acid, not the over the counter 400mcg. It can be prescribed but I think you can buy online also.

I take Zita West Pregnancy Plan because I wanted one with methylfolate and iron (and didn't want to have to take more than one vitamin a day).

Emilychen · 02/07/2026 13:28

Oh that is really helpful, thank you — one tablet with both methylfolate and iron is exactly what I was after (I hate juggling three different bottles). I will look up Zita West; the Pregnacare has been fine but the iron in it felt a bit low to me. Really appreciate you sharing what worked for you.

Hi there,

I am on Pregnacare Max as it seemed to have nearly all the essential nutrients but it's a bit pricey. I needed as much nutrients as possible as my diet is crap.

Welcome to the UK! I'd gladly take your place in America though lol! :D

I take either ova or proceive
I also take a separate iron on top as most pre natals contain around 17mg but you a actually require more iron during pregnancy due to increased blood volume and i dont have a very iron rich diet

Emilychen · 03/07/2026 12:11

That's really helpful, thank you — I hadn't come across Proceive, I'll take a look. The iron point makes total sense; the Pregnacare I'm on felt a bit low on iron to me too, so adding a separate one sounds smart. Really appreciate you sharing what's worked for you. x

I am taking (and did for 8 months before falling pregnant) the Metagenics pregnancy & conception one a day - includes pretty much everything I had researched (did take omega and coQ10 separately) and in all the forms I wanted, super high quality and just a great company. They are always next day delivery, my pot didn’t arrive last week and they sent me two months worth for free! X

Emilychen · 04/07/2026 16:17

Honestly the fact they sent you two months free when your pot went missing tells me everything about a company, that kind of thing wins my loyalty instantly. I moved over mid-pregnancy so I'm still learning all the UK brands, and hearing what actually worked for someone beats guessing off a shelf. Going to look into the Metagenics one, thank you so much for the detail. x
