Some of the stories in italics make you gasp. How can women be treated like that.

Absolutely horrifying to know this is happening in a supposedly civilised country. My heart goes out to mothers there.

I remember the horrendous scandal of the Romanian orphanages. Having read the article, I can see how the mistreatment of mothers, archaic practices and misogynistic attitudes all came together to cause it.
