Should I pay for a private scan or just wait?

Ooh, I really don't now what to do and am looking for some advice please. I had a missed miscarriage at the 12 week scan back in Jan and am now 8 weeks pregnant again. I can't decide whether to pay for a private scan to set my mind at rest. My last baby died at 9+6 according to the docs so I know if i have a scan now there is still a chance that I could loose this one too. I'm thinking that seeing the heartbeat (if there is one) might relax me a little. What would you do?

Hi popcornprincess. Have you asked the doc/midwife team if they will refer you for an early scan? I know they will do this in some areas.

We had the same situation and unfortunately EPU refused us the early scan but we did pay for a private scan and it made a massive difference to me - I think I would have collapsed under the anxiety if we hadn't.

you may be able to book a reassurance scan through your epu, can you phone and ask them?

i couldn't have done without my reassurance scans (i ended up having about 3 of them) literally would have driven myself crazy

If you think it will help, and you don't mind paying, then i would get one privately.
I think I would
congrats by the way

Hi there - as others have said, your EPU may do a reassurance scan since you had a mc before. If not then it would probably be worth you having a private one to put your mind at rest. If they do see the heartbeat at an early scan there is a much better chance that your lo will be ok. Good luck

It is a tough one.

I had a mmc discovered at a 10wk scan back in early March. The embryo had stopped developing at 5wks.

I had a private viability scan last week at 7wks and was hugely relieved to see a heartbeat. It hasn't stopped me worrying but has helped quite a bit - having said that my scan was after the stage it all went wrong last time.

It still feels like a long wait until my 12wk scan in July!

tinkhasabean · 24/06/2008 11:43

if you feel that it would make you feel better i would go for it.
i had a scan @ 9wks + 2 days and it was great to see that there was actually something there. also mc goes down to about 5% once you see a heartbeat

Pinkjenny · 24/06/2008 11:44

If its going to put your mind at rest and you can afford it, I would pay for a private scan.

hannah001 · 24/06/2008 12:06

I paid for a scan at 7.5 weeks and saw the heart beat. I miscarried at 9 weeks. I looked it up - and medical sites say - risk of miscarriage drops when you HEAR the heartbeat - not when you see it. This time round I didn't bother based on previous experience, and waited for the nuchal scan.

pregnantpopcornprincess · 24/06/2008 12:29

Thanks for all your advice. I've called my EPU and they have agreed to see me this afternoon. I know it's not a failsafe and does not mean that this one will make it but at least it means that I may be able to relax a little.

fair enough I can understand that too. I think it has to be your own personal experience to make you think it's a waste of time. Hope all goes well.

Seabright · 24/06/2008 14:02

I had one, it was great and worth every penny (about £200.00 at the Fetal Medical Centre in London)

bikerunski · 24/06/2008 14:52

Whatever it takes to put your mind at rest at this stage surely? What price peace of . Glad EPU can see you though. Good luck.

Hello - I thought I would give you all an update. I went for my scan and everything was fine. In fact I've got identical twins. I'm in a deep state of shock!

Congratulations

Ooh, I shouldn't have read this thread. I'm 12+4wks pg but haven't had my scan yet. Furthermore, when I had my first appt with the mw last week, my ds (11mo) was so grumpy that she couldn't even attempt to listen to the baby's heartbeat. Suddenly got fears about missed miscarriage!

blot4 · 25/06/2008 11:25

BTW, congratulations popcornprincess. How exciting to have twins. Although, assuming my worries are completely irrational and my pg is fine, I think I'll have a heart attack if they tell me I'm having twins - 3 children under 18mo would be a nightmare!

dgomez · 25/06/2008 11:54

I have one scan every month since I had 2 miscarriages in the past, I also used to go and check the heart beat every week until the 25th week, this is because in one of my previous pregnancies the baby was dead but I didn't have any symptoms and when I found out it was really, really sad.
