Anyone taken Cyclizine for nausea in early pregnancy?

Hi,

I am 7 weeks pregnant and experiencing nausea. This is my second child and I didn’t have it with my first.

The GP has prescribed Cyclizine (which I know is commonly given) however, when the pharmacy dispensed it, there is a big label on the front that says ‘these are advised to use as necessary but there is no such thing as no risk in pregnancy’.

This has obviously made me over anxious. Has anyone taken it? And it be useful? I’ve also read that it isn’t for some, which puts me off trying it more on the off chance it doesn’t help.

Thank you.

I took it, I ended up also taking another medication which I felt helped more. The better medication was out of stock after 2 weeks so then I just took cyclizine. I still felt quite rough on it and thought it wasn’t doing anything but if ever I didn’t take it I felt worse so it definitely did. There is a website I think called BUMPS or similar that gives information on drugs in pregnancy that my GP recommended I read.

If I had another pregnancy I would go on medication sooner and ask for other medications if I still felt awful. I know more now than I did before regarding what medications can be used for HG etc

If you’re not already it’s worth looking up Pregnancy Sickness Support.

Sorry you’re feeling rotten

Yes I got palpitations on it and it didn't really help the sickness. I tried every sickness drug during pregnancy but the one that really worked for me was ondanestron orodispersible (the ones that melt on your tongue). I get awful HG in pregnancy and a) the sickness drugs didn't harm my kids but b) they did cause me really strong acid/vomiting in tablet form.
Hope you feel better soon.

Yes I took it but it was useless. It’s the cheapest anti sickness med, hence why it’s prescribed first. I went on to have Xonvea instead which was brilliant.

yup from about 6 weeks til birth with DD1, but numerous times i tried to come off it or reduce my dose, and failed as it made me get very poorly quickly.

With DD2 from about 5 weeks til birth and i didnt even attempt to reduce the dose with a 1 year old to look after.

I had HG til birth with both children.

14 / 13 years later they are fine

Yep, from about 5 weeks pregnant until birth with both my DDs.
It’s the first one they prescribe and I know a lot of women don’t find it sufficient, but it worked fine for me.

Xonvea has been the best sickness for me. It’s specially designed for pregnancy nausea and I have found it really helped and I’ve had no side effects.

Yep. There is no drug that is “safe” during pregnancy because clinical trials don’t test on pregnant women! I was on cyclizine and promethazine from 5-16 weeks and baby absolutely fine - he’s now 2.5 and asleep in my arms!!
