38 weeks prodromal labour? Very painful contractions 3-5 minutes apart for the past 5 hours.

Aware I probably won't get any/many replies at this hour. Just in a lot of pain and having to breath through contractions that started 5ish hours ago, after dtd.

I'm pretty certain this isn't the real thing but it's bloody painful. I've had a few similar episodes in the past few days, but I've been able to sleep through them. Any similar experiences? When did you go into real labour?

I would contact the midwife out of hours line. You may be a few cm dilated.

Executrixnotextraordinaire · 12/06/2026 02:15

Id agree, better to get checked out, baby is not early at this point so good chance it is the real thing. Good luck!

Sillysausage76 · 12/06/2026 02:18

Id third that, theirs no harm in calling for advice. Their likely say wait and see but id call just to check.

Goblinmusic · 12/06/2026 04:17

Thanks everyone. I did call but they said to wait at home because the contractions aren't lasting long enough so it's likely not real labour. They're only about ~45 seconds long, but very frequent.

They have not stopped either and I've been up all night with them. Thankfully I have a drs appt this morning. (Not in the UK currently so I see an OB, instead of a midwife).

Counting down the hours and minutes until my Dr appt. Honestly, so painful. This is second baby and I had my first with no pain relief so I'm pretty sure I'm not being dramatic, but maybe my pain tolerance has gone way down somehow.

How many hrs until your doctor appointment? If I was you I would give them a call again soon. Good luck

Zippidydoodah · 12/06/2026 05:25

Sounds like it could be real if it’s stopping you sleeping. Hope all goes well! 💐

Insidemyownhead · 12/06/2026 05:45

This happened to me, woken up by contractions on the Thursday morning, 1 minute contraction every 10 minutes… this continued until the Friday evening when it finally ramped up to one every 5 minutes… it was so painful and utterly exhausting! By early AM Saturday morning my waters broke and things started moving super quickly, and on such little sleep.
my advice for anyone looking back, get checked even if you’re unsure, they will be able to give you something for the pain and to help you sleep at the very least until things get properly moving.

Gonnaeatalotofpeaches · 12/06/2026 06:07

I would get checked out if I were you- hopefully you have already!
When I was in labour with my second the midwife on the phone said my contractions weren’t long enough to be in established labour however when I arrived at hospital I was already 9cm dilated. For me it was just the part where it’s so painful you can’t talk that they deemed not long enough.

romdowa · 12/06/2026 06:32

With the level of pain that you are in. Id just arrive at the hospital

Nursemumma92 · 12/06/2026 06:47

This happened to me on and off for 2 weeks with my second. It would ramp up and then stop again after a few hours. I gave birth at 41+2 in 2.5 hours when it was the real deal.

Hope it is soon for you, it's so exhausting!

Goblinmusic · 12/06/2026 06:47

I've asked if I can come in early to be checked. Just waiting for a reply! The hospital is a long drive so I don't want to go and be turned away.

I really hope this is real labour because I don't know how much more I can take, if it's not.

Nothing is happening. Baby is very very low and my cervix is shortening but that's it.

I'm just in so much pain. I can't walk or talk through contractions but apparently they're not even doing anything.

Accidentally, gave birth in the car this afternoon, in case anyone was following!

Gonnaeatalotofpeaches · 12/06/2026 18:40

Congratulations! I hope you are both doing well and it wasn’t too traumatic in the car.

DaveWatts · 12/06/2026 18:46

Oh my, congratulations! I hope you’re doing ok!

goingtotown · 12/06/2026 18:50

Zippidydoodah · 12/06/2026 18:54

Oh my goodness, I hope you’re ok! I’m guessing they didn’t let you stay in…this makes me quite cross.

Anyway, congratulations on your little one and all the best 💐

Oh wow! This thread took a big turn! Congrats OP!

Bobbybobbins · 12/06/2026 19:36

Congrats OP! I was on the ward with a lady who had also given birth in their car after being sent home.

Executrixnotextraordinaire · 12/06/2026 23:01

Well done, congratulations its a story for when they're older 😂. Hope you are all doing well and everyone is home relaxing in post baby glow.

bk1981 · 13/06/2026 17:28

Congratulations on your new arrival!
I was about to post to say insist on getting checked as when I was in labour I was told that my contractions were too short to be doing anything. Four hours later I was checked again and was 10cm....
