Taking 40 mg omeprazole during pregnancy — anyone with similar experience?

Hi everyone,

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. During my pregnancy, I was prescribed 40 mg of omeprazole and took it daily for about two months, always on an empty stomach as directed.

I’ve been feeling a bit anxious about whether this could have affected my baby, and I was wondering if anyone else has been in the same situation (taking 40 mg of omeprazole on empty stomach for 1 or 2 months) . If so, how did things turn out for you?

Thank you so much in advance for sharing

I was only on 20mg of omperazole pregnancy without issues and my daughter has been on omperazole since she was 8 weeks and she is nearly 6. By 18 weeks old she was on 20mg a day and she's nearly 6 now and takes 40mg

They are so careful with medication and lots of mums take omperazole in pregnancy but do ask your midwife if you need some reassurance

It's definitely safe in pregnancy, please don't worry. I wouldn't have survived without it x

Worth getting your iron levels checked if you don't know them, just in case. It should be an easy fix if you need topping up.

@juu92 Sorry, I can't reply to your private message so replying here, hope that's ok.

I just tried to log into my NHS app to check the dose I was on but it's not working either, great day for technology!

But I do know I increased the dose throughout pregnancy, starting on one tablet a day and ending on four, two in the morning and two at night which I think is the maximum dose. I can't remember if I took them on an empty stomach.

@ChasingRainbow5 Thanks so much ! And you took it daily? For how many months? If you could find the dose that would be great, thanks so much for your help

Yes, daily. Maximum dose for maybe 2/3 months.

It’s really commonly prescribed in pregnancy, you really should try not to worry.

I took 40mg throughout my entire pregnancy with no ill effects on my son. Like with anything else drs will do a risk vs benefit assessment and wouldn’t prescribe if not necessary. The evidence recorded says it’s safe in pregnancy.

@sparklyblueberry2 thanks so much for your message. Did you take the 40 mg daily? Did you take it with empty stomach or after eating ?

I took on an empty stomach.
Even water used to make my symptoms worse so omeprazole was literally a life saver. It didn’t cure it but I was so much better on them and meant I could eat well for baby.

obviously please ask your dr/oharmacist all the questions for reassurance, they genuinely will not mind!

@sparklyblueberry2 Thanks for your message. If you took it on an empty stomach, how long did you wait before eating?
Did you take 40 mg daily? For how many months did you take the 40 mg?
Thanks so much — all this information helps me a lot.

@juu92 hey OP. With my first baby I had awful reflux and sickness, took omeprazole 40mg per day split in two doses morning and evening on an empty stomach. I did this from 8 weeks to term! Currently expecting no.2, only 7 weeks back on omeprazole already. My little boy is 18 months now it didn't affect him x
