SPOTTING WHILST PREGNANT VIA IVF 🩸

Hi lovely people
So I am 6w 1d pregnant through IVF. All seemed to be going well until I started with spotting 2 and half days ago. It keeps coming and going.. never really gets heavy.. and is brown like old blood.
I am on progesterone pesseries 3 x a day & the spotting seems to go worse when I insert these.. I’m just looking for similar stories that turned out fine? I’ve had previous miscarriage so of course I am on high alert!
Please can you all tell me about spotting you had when pregnant around 6 week that was absolutely fine. I would like to hear if any of you were on pessaries and if you think it was cervix irritation that caused the spotting as this is what I think it could be but I’m just so scared of miscarriage 😞
I have my early scan in 5days so I know I’ll get answers then but looking for some reassurance.

Thank you all in advance ❤️❤️

Unfortunately nobody can give you any guarantees.
Spotting in early pregnancy is actually very common. Its even mentioned on nhs website affecting as many as 1 in 4 women i think. In my first pregnancy , I had zero spotting in early pregnancy but had bleeding beyond 20+ that nobody could figure why.
Im currently 12 weeks pregnant with my second and i spot every few days. Ive had 3 scans already and again, no explanation for the spotting

Thank you for the reply! It’s just so difficult everything I’ve had to do to fall pregnant and when I saw spotting I immediately thought the worst. But it’s very reassuring to hear other people have the same experience. Thank you ☺️

My pregnancy was ivf and I remember the absolute terror of early pregnancy spotting. Mine was just brown too. Again, this is anecdotal and there are no guarantees but my twins from that pregnancy turn 12 this month.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 02/05/2026 19:04

When I was pregnant at 40 😳 (not ivf) I had brown spotting early on. I was absolutely terrified and thought I was miscarrying but it was like my body was getting rid of “old blood” that was still in my system. I hope all goes well for you x

I had spotting at around 7 weeks in this IVF pregnancy, I went to the Early Pregnancy Unit of my local hospital for a scan which was very reassuring- they also booked me in for a scan at 10 weeks. I had my discharge scan from my ivf hospital at 8 weeks too. I also had spotting at 9 weeks and was sent for another scan. So I ended up having had 4 by the time of my 12 week scan. I’m fourteen weeks now.

It is absolutely nerve wracking having spotting in pregnancy and it does have an extra layer of something for us perhaps who’ve had such struggles to get pregnant.

hope you’re ok.

Ps- I was on Cyclogest twice a day as well and was told it could cause spotting.

bluepurplegreen · 02/05/2026 19:15

I had spotting around 6 weeks. I read it’s v common and then waited to see if anything got worse, which it didn’t, though it did stay around a day. Since had a scan at 7.5 weeks.

I’ve also read the pessaries can irritate some people.

IVF pregnancy here, two precious mcs. Current pregnancy had a red gush around 6 weeks, thought that was that (even though it was small I’m trained to expect the worst) had a scheduled scan anyway two days later. The red bleeding never came back (was a bit like a nosebleed and I think from the cervix/progesterone) but scan showed a sub chorionic hematoma and I bled brown pink and a little red but mostly brown, and dark brown, for a couple of weeks. Horrible time thinking the worst every time it came back, however, fortnightly scans showed good progress and now am 32 weeks. I hope everything works out for you x

I head loads of spotting (including quite a lot of bright red blood) with both of my IVF pregnancies. I was utterly convinced it was over each time. I now have two wonderful DC age 3 and 5. Obviously that doesn't always mean it is never an issue, but shows how it's isnt always an issue.

Good luck!!

Editing to add i was on 3x cyclogest (for most of my pregnancies due to precious v late miscarriage/early still birth)

SquashPenguin · 02/05/2026 21:19

I bled consistently- all day every day- from weeks 5 to 8. It was terrifying but my local EPU were great. That baby is two next month! Hard at the time to think of any thing else but it doesn’t always mean something more sinister.

NewAgeDawning · 02/05/2026 21:46

Are you taking pessaries? Vaginally? I hear it can irritate the cervix

Oh yes it’s awful. Especially when it all seems to have been going well! Thanks for the reply.. I will know more in a few days anyway and hopefully it’s just old blood or it’s from the pessaries! ☺️🤞🏻

Yes it’s so scary! Thanks for the reply.. I’m just hopeful it’s old blood or pesseries causing it! 🤞🏻 fingers crossed

Wow it is so scary isn’t it. Mine has been for the past 3 days going into my 4th. It defo seems to come worse when I insert the pessaries then pretty much goes until I have to insert again so im hopeful it’s nothing sinister .. but it is very scary! I have a scan this week so I wilL hope for the best 🤞🏻

Thank you for your reply. It’s so scary seeing any form of blood/spotting but I am hopeful it’s the pessaries just irritating the cervix as I am on 3 a day!
I will remain hopeful and keep everything crossed until my first scan 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Yes I am on them 3 times a day and it defo seems to get worse when I insert, then it pretty much clears up until I insert again. It’s just so scary 😟 but I am hopeful for the best outcome 🤞🏻
