I think it depends how ready you are (i.e. how advanced the cervix is). I don't want to upset you, but I had one done with ds and was terrified because the doctor (her name was Pandy, I naturally had to name her Handy Pandy) had just done one in the bed next door and the poor lady started crying afterwards. Imagine my horror when Dr Handy Pandy snaps on a new pair of gloves and starts in my direction.

However, I'm pleased to say that I found it nothing more than uncomfortable, because I was already partially dilated and the cervix was, as they say, favourable.

Are you overdue? Any reason to believe you're already on the way, like contractions having been noted via monitoring?

I hope you'll be fine - the good thing is, this is the start of things really happening! Best of luck and will look out for your birth story.

first sweep did nothing

2nd sweep - consultant broke my waters (I asked her to) - was 10 days overdue. Baby born c36 hours later

I don't think ds' head was engaged either, although did have hideous moment when the doc who eventually broke my waters said "ooh, he's got a good head of hair" - erk! (That didn't hurt either I might add).

I'm sure it'll be fine - like with the dreaded smear test, you have to relax even though really you would like to run away as fast as possible.

Some info on how it works

was uncomfy here too, but not painful, had sweep 24 hrs later dd2 was born (turns out I was 2cm dilated when she did sweep)
