Early Pregnancy, Yolk sac no fetal pole ( Rising HCG)

Hi everyone,

I’m currently under EPU due to having had two previous miscarriages, and I’m just looking to see if anyone has had a similar experience.

Last Thursday I had a scan where they could only see a gestational sac measuring 7.7mm. My hCG level at that point was 9,451. Because my levels were considered quite high for what was seen on the scan, they mentioned concerns about a possible ectopic pregnancy and arranged to monitor my bloods.

I had repeat hCG tests:

Saturday: 14,198
Monday: 21,544

The doctor said the levels were rising but not quite as expected, so they still had concerns.

I went back today (Wednesday) for another scan, and there has been some progression. There is now a yolk sac visible and the gestational sac is measuring 10.7mm. My hCG is now around 31,000.

The doctor said that based on my hCG levels (especially Monday’s result), the pregnancy “should” appear further along on the scan, so things aren’t quite matching up. She offered either a camera procedure or going straight to a D&C, but I declined both.

The nurses actually reassured me that hCG levels don’t always follow the textbook and that the progression seen on the scan (now with a yolk sac) is a positive sign. They agreed it was reasonable to wait, and I’ve been booked in for another scan in 7 days.

I’m now in the waiting stage, which is really hard.

Has anyone had something similar where dates and hCG didn’t quite match up, but things progressed normally?

Thank you

I feel as though I’m a step behind you so can’t add a positive story at this stage although fingers crossed. I attend the EPAU yesterday as I have been under the ARU for 2 years and any pregnancies at 6 weeks my Dr wanted looking into at the EPAU. They found absolutely nothing in my uterus so put me down as No IUP (no interuterine pregnancy) and PUL (pregnancy of unknown location). They took my bloods yesterday and I get them repeated tomorrow. I was supposed to be informed of my results yesterday but nobody rang me.

I’m in the what do I do if… phase and wondering if I had high HCG but they saw nothing, would I need to have the injection etc. It’s scary that the results would land on a Friday as my EPU is only open until 4pm on a Friday so what would I have to wait until Monday to get the injection etc and potentially rupture. I’m living in a torturous area of my mind.

However, I spent all of yesterday looking at success stories and there are many of them. Any stress or concerns just go back to your EPU and ask them to scan you again or you could get your bloods done privately if it gives you any peace of mind
