Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice or to hear from anyone who’s been through something similar.

I’m currently 5 weeks + 4 days pregnant and under the early pregnancy unit due to having had two previous miscarriages. Today I went to gynaecology for a scan, and they were able to see a gestational sac in the womb but no yolk sac yet.

They also found some fluid in my pelvis, which has made them consider the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy or a burst cyst. My hCG levels were around 9,500, and the doctor mentioned that they might normally expect to see more in the womb at this stage with levels that high.

I’ve been booked in for repeat blood tests in 48 hours (Saturday) and another scan next Thursday. They did offer to keep me in overnight to monitor for ectopic pregnancy, but said I could go home if I preferred, so I’ve come home to rest.

I don’t really feel like it’s ectopic as I’ve not had any pain or symptoms that would suggest that—just some lower backache, which I’ve also had in previous pregnancies.

I suppose I’m just hoping to hear from anyone who’s had a similar situation—whether things progressed positively (like going back later and seeing a yolk sac/heartbeat), or even if not, just to understand others’ experiences. The possibilities they’ve given me are a burst cyst, ectopic pregnancy, that the pregnancy may not continue, or that it might simply be too early to see more.

Thank you in advance for any advice or experiences you can share 🤍

hmm, it’s so hard to say from 5 weeks 4 days. Though there is a clue in the high hcg. I’ve had three pregnancies, the first a scan at 6+something showed only sac and yolk, and I knew I should have seen fetal pole by then. Confirmed mmc two weeks later. The second, I had an extremely early positive test (5dpo) and high progesterone and hcg for my gestation, but the embryo has implanted likely in the tube as I had two haemorrhagic areas in my lower right abdomen, and repeat blood draws showed erratic hcg behaviour. The third, the fp was there but showed no hb till a bit bigger (over 6 weeks).

I think there’s no way of telling apart from waiting for time to pass, and that really it could be ok, but also maybe not. The main thing is you’re being scanned and monitored and you will get some answers soon. It’s a rubbish waiting time. I stuffed my spare thinking time with audiobooks and videogames to avoid having to dwell on it. I hope very much everything appears by your next scan.
