Brown spotting, measuring behind at early scan and worried about outcome

started with brownish discharge/bleeding yesterday, not heaps just little amount when i wipe. I rang the EPU and they scanned me today and said i was measuring at 5 weeks. i thought it was 7 based off LMP (first day of last period) which is 26th of february. My Peak ovulation test was 10th March.
I got my first VVVV faint positive on a test on the 20th of march! then followed by a missed period on the 27th.

Iv got to go back in 2 weeks to see if they can find baby’s heart beat. They only found a yolk sac with a tiny little bean very hard to find.. and then found an ovary cyst!!!! yikes
Iv come home to more brown blood when wiping but its flows more when i’m doing a number 2 (TMI)

Hasanyone got any advice or been in the same position. it’s hard to stay positive when you know how these things end😭

I’m afraid I don’t have any advice but just wanted to say that that does sound really stressful, that it sounds like you’ve done exactly the right thing by going to the EPU, and there’s no harm in ringing them again if you don’t want to wait for 2 weeks and you’re getting more worried. Bleeding at 5 weeks can be normal too. Hang in there, sending you a hug xx

That is so hard. Do bear in the mind the measurements at that stage are so tiny, it's common to have discrepancies in dates. light bleeding can be completely fine, i had it in early pregnancy and all fine. If the bleeding gets worse, definitely call back.

I’ll be honest, in my experience when I’ve had this happen it wasn’t good news for me. While it can be normal for measurements to be a bit off in the early days, almost 2 weeks out isn’t good. By 7 weeks you should be able to see a heartbeat. My old IVF clinic scanned at 7 weeks as they say if it’s worked ok you are guaranteed to see a heartbeat at that point. Going by your positive test date, you can’t be under 6w5. If it was me, I’d try and stay a bit hopeful but also prepare for the worst.

I’ve had a few MMC and every time at an early scan I was measuring behind. The first time I was 6w2 but was measuring 5w2. Second was 7w1 and was measuring 5w4. Third was just an empty sac at 7 weeks. Every time I’ve been made to come back in two weeks to check. Twice I started to miscarry naturally but once I needed surgery to remove it.

i prefer honesty, i kinda expected this news.
iv done too much googling and found that yeah my situation isn’t a happy ending unfortunately😢 i just know in my body that it’s not good, all my pregnancy symptoms have gone..
sounds awful but i hope i naturally miscarry i really don’t want medical intervention, i just want nature to take its course. I’ve decided to stay off work just incase anything does happen.

Im all cried out, from the minute i saw blood now iv kind of come to terms with it. this is my second pregnancy, but this won’t stop me from trying again❤️

Yep! I totally get that. I just knew as well and all the medical professionals kept gaslighting me saying my dates were wrong. It was incredibly frustrating and wasted weeks of my time.

MamaB12 · 17/04/2026 10:53

the heavy bleeding has started with cramps and leg aches.. :( feels exactly like a heavy period, so so so gutted 💔
i rang the EPU they said to monitor bleeding and ring again if worsening but i don’t think it can get any worse than this💔

iv been holding back tears since wednesday, sounds awful but i just want to get it over and done with so me and my partner can start trying again. some people might disagree with that but im not letting this hold me back from trying again🤞🏻

So sorry to read this. Sending you strength to get through this. For both my sons I had similar (later for my second) before immediately falling pregnant and going successfully full term after. Really hope it works out xx

Hi OP
I am so sorry you are going through this. This looks like the bleeding I had along with the little tiny clots in May last year - it was a miscarriage, but I am now holding my four week old baby boy who I conceived immediately after in July. So please hang in there. My EPU were hopeless and I did not get a scan, I had to wait two long very long weeks to have a proper bleed and that was the retained early pregnancy.

Sending all the love.
