Told boy at 17-week scan but worried the sex may be wrong

I am 17weeks pregnant. I was SO sick in first trimester and have so many spots (had clear skin my whole life). I have a little girl and am so sure this is another girl (girls run in my family).

We had a scan on Friday and the consultant said boy… I’m now doubting and thinking it was the cord? She tried to get a view again but baby was moving too much!

My husband was overjoyed… he always wanted a boy and girl… bur I’m convinced it’s wrong!

My Mother in Law was told her third child (25yrs ago) was a boy and it ended up being a girl… I’m scared my husband will get too excited and it’s wrong.

Does it matter that much?

CrescentMoonLanding · 12/04/2026 19:38

Why did you have a scan at 17 weeks? Was this NHS?

AndresyFiorella · 12/04/2026 19:39

This is why I think it's much better to wait until the birth to find out; then you're delighted (and certain!) whichever sex it is. I guess your options are to pay for an extra scan or just wait and see.

I was horrifically sick with my boys more than girls.

The sec of your babies is determined by your partner not your family history.

I always took the sex of the babies with a pinch of salt until they were born. I would say they think it’s a girl etc. However for both my boys it was very obvious and a lot of showing off genitals

LamentableShoes · 12/04/2026 19:41

Maybe your husband could be excited regardless of the sex of the baby? It doesn't hugely matter unless you're buying big pink bows or something for the kid?

Congrats, by the way! Hope your pregnancy goes well and you can relax.

Most people I know with 2 children have two the same sex, but it's obviously also very common to have one of each.

I am consultation led following a difficult first pregnancy hence the 17week scan x

If you are dwelling on this in a way that's weighing on your mind I'd pay for one of the fun/ private baby scans. We did this for my first 8 years ago and paid £55 for it.

Also with the girls running in the family- I think this is often true on the mothers side but you have the dads genes in there too. I was one of three girls and had nine female cousins and just one male growing up, and my husband had only a sister for a sibling but we had one of each gender with our two. So I'm not sure this has much bearing on your own pairing.

I had bad sickness with both pregnancies.

SabrinaThwaite · 12/04/2026 19:47

I was convinced DC2 was going to be a girl, despite the scan results, as I was sick for a full 8 months and I had sailed through pregnancy with DS1. Nope, scan was right.

DramaAlpaca · 12/04/2026 19:49

I found out the sex with two of my three boys. It was very obvious from the scans that they were boys, no doubt at all. I was horribly sick until halfway through with all of them.

hyggetyggedotorg · 12/04/2026 19:55

Maybe that’s just how your body handles pregnancy? I believe it’s quite rare to be told boy & have a girl, more so than the other way around.

Most people I know with 2 children have two the same sex, but it's obviously also very common to have one of each.

If a couple have two children, they have a 25% chance of having two boys, a 25% chance of having two girls, a 25% chance of having a girl then a boy and a 25% chance of having a boy then a girl. That means that half of two child families have two the same sex and half have one of each.

Wait til your 20 week scan if you have doubts. I know they don’t have to tell you but mine did.
was that scan from a window to the womb type place? They got mine right at about 16 weeks.
