Heavy bleeding at five weeks and waiting for an early scan

I think I am about 5wks pregnant, today I felt a sudden gush of blood as I stood up and got my husband to check, I had bled through my jeans. Went straight to EPU, they have booked me in for a scan in two days’ time and said they didn’t need to take any bloods. I had a speculum exam, the doctor said my cervix was closed and the bleeding was coming from the back of my vagina, he asked if I had had sex recently (which I had yesterday) and said it could be that, and my cervix had been irritated, or it could be a miscarriage but said it is really hard to tell as my cervix is closed and no pregnancy tissue was visible.

I am fearing the worst and absolutely heartbroken, it took me a long time to get pregnant. Has anyone had anything similar and had a positive outcome? I can understand that it is probably going to be a loss but having to wait two days for the scan is torturing me…

I had the same, and was being prepped for theatre when another doctor examined me and said they wanted to wait as my cervix was closed. I had bleeding on and off until about 18 weeks and had so many warnings from the doctors about the risk of early labour, baby being very small etc. Baby was 3 days early, a nice healthy weight and is now in his 30s!
You must be worried sick but take care of yourself and I really hope all goes well for you

@alwayswaitingfortheweekend oh wow I am so glad it turned out okay for you in the end! Do you know why they were taking you to theatre, did they suspect an ectopic? And do you remember how many weeks you were?

I am worried sick, but thank you for your well wishes and you have given me a sliver of hope 🤞🏻

There's no way of knowing except I think it's a good sign your cervix is closed. I had the same at 7 and 11 weeks and that child is now 8 years old. I hope you get good news.

@stompinthewoodsI was about 5/6 weeks and they were taking me to theatre for a D&C as the first doctor assumed it was an incomplete miscarriage. I was just so lucky that a more senior doctor came along. I dont think they had a clue why it happened but I have spoken to other people who have had heavy bleeding and been ok so its not always bad news

@Wonderones thank you so much and I’m so happy to hear that you had a positive outcome 💕
@alwayswaitingfortheweekend oh my goodness, how scary that it could have been a different outcome! I’m glad that senior doctor stopped it for you. I am trying to not get my hopes up too much but thank you so much for the positivity 💕🤞🏻

I had the same at 5 weeks, after years of trying to get pregnant through IVF. This was the first pregnancy that had gotten this far. I was devastated.

The next day we went to the EPU, had a scan and heard my baby’s heartbeat for the first time. It was wonderful. She’s now 2 years old, healthy as a button.

In my case it was a haematoma between the uterus wall and the amniotic sack. Apparently it’s very common in IVF pregnancies.

I hope it works out for you!

@alomath oh really! I had been googling what the causes could be and seen a lot of people saying they also had hematomas in early pregnancy. Mine is not an IVF pregnancy however so maybe less likely. Thank you for your positive story and well wishes 💕
