Could I be pregnant despite taking the pill and other medication?

Ok so, for context: I have been on mixed birth control pills for altmost a year now, in parralel I have been also taking meds from the pshyciatrist which i've been told wash out a bit of the effect of pill.

Now, what makes me think I might be pregnant?

-My last period (march13th-march18th) only lasted 5 days instead of 7, very light cramps and a flow so low it resembled spotting (yes the contraceptives reduced my flow and cramps, but that happened at the beggining)

-Visit to the ER where all the doctors told me to see a gynecologist, after I had severe abdominal pain in the area of the uterus (cycle day 15)

-Regular pregnancy symptoms like nausea, frequent urinating, breasts that havent lost size since the last period, light brown spotting, light cramping

and the real kicker - 28 day cycle, light brown spotting appearing + the symptoms getting a bit more profound 5 to 6 days after my ovulation ended, days 21 and 22 of the cycle, 8 to 7 days to my period. I've had a tracked and regular menstual cycle, none of these have happened to me before. Nothing caused me excessive stress, same diet, same medications with no chenges!

Any information is gladly appreciated!

NOTE: I will be seeing a healthcare proffesional and I will take a test, but I just need this as a peace of mind until then🙂

go to a supermarket now, then you can test tomorrow using FMU. I’m not sure anyone here can put your mind at rest tbh. Don’t book to see a HCP before taking a test, because they will want to know if you’ve tested.

Annonymouscabbage · 04/04/2026 17:31

thank you so much for your advice! :)

unfortunately I have no way to get a test at the moment since I dont have any money, but as soon as I get any ill definetly buy one!

What is the psychiatric medication?

If you need a pregnancy test and cannot afford one, you can walk into a sexual health clinic and ask. I would never turn anyone away for that, even if they didn’t have an appointment.

Annonymouscabbage · 04/04/2026 17:42

my medication is carbamanzepine and I've been talking it for a year and a half.

there is a support group in my city for pregnant women that offer free tests, but i am going to leave the city for my birthday party and I'll only come back on the 6th, but I definetly will either buy or get one from them!

I’m not understanding how you can afford to travel out of the city for a birthday party but not to buy a pregnancy test?

Yes, this? You can get a supermarket pregnancy test for less than 2 pounds.

cannynotsay · 04/04/2026 18:08

How old are you, you need to take accountability and responsibility if you think you’re pregnant. I don’t even know where to start. Instead of going out for your birthday take a test?

Im celebrating my 18th birthday and my parents pay it off of vacation tickets and borrowed money. I cannot have them find out I migjt be pregnant since I fear their judgement. Plus I live in a country where pregnancy tests cost 20 RON which is impossibile to get unless i ask for lunch money

But I came here seeking advice on my situation, not to recieve judgement on whats going on in my life

It is already paid by my parents, off of vacation tickets recieved from my step dad's work and borrowed money. I have to keep this undercover since I dont want to recieve judgement from my parents

They only sell them in pharmacies here, pretty high prices

You’re going to have to test and sort it out if you’re really think you’re pregnant. it’s not judgment it’s just alarming and concerning. If you at fast at least you can explore your options. All if you’re 18 and celebrating surly you would want to know and not drink etc

Blimms · 04/04/2026 18:59

If you went to hospital with those symptoms, they would most certainly have given you a pregnancy test.

Annonymouscabbage · 04/04/2026 19:03

I ususally do not drink alcohool so that is out of the way! I appreciate you clarified that you were not judging me, this does make me feel better!

It was a children's hospital since I was still 17, and I was assisted by my dad which made me not want to openly ask for a hcg blood/urine test(you have to ask for them to do that). they did a ultrasound and they werent able to see anything clearly because my bladder was full (no one told me to go to the bathroom beforehand and i didnt know since i have never been in this situation before)

It’s there anyone you can speak too? You shouldn’t have to stress about this alone

20 Ron is 3.50...

Blimms · 04/04/2026 19:10

Having your bladder full actually helps. When you go for an ultrasound for a pregnancy you are specifically told to make sure you have a full bladder.

Annonymouscabbage · 04/04/2026 19:11

they told me before that i should have it full and then the ultrasound report it said that the full bladder stopped the optimal pelvian examination, I have no ideea??

i cannot ask for money from my parents unless they know what its for, and considering the current financial situation of the country and our private financial situation even that means a lot. I tried to ask them for money and said they were for snacks for me and my partner and they said that they didnt have any

As carbamanzepine is linked to birth defects and you think you may have been pregnant since March you will.need to act fast if you want a termination which is only legal up to 14 weeks as an elective in Romania. You're going to need a lot more than 20 RON as most are done privately and if you do have the baby they are also very expensive

If you're on the pill you should know that you are not ovulating, your period is not a period but a withdrawal bleed and your "cycle" is not a cycle as you are taking hormones and your body is not having a natural period but responding to the hormones. This is how oral hormonal contraception works.
. Carbamanzepine can also cause break through bleeding as well as a slight chance of ovulation depending on the exact pill you take . I'd have serious issues with a psychiatrist who didn't suggest another means of contraception for a 17 year old who is being prescribed this medication presumably for bipolar

Is there any reason you're seeking advice from a forum in the UK and not a Romanian one?

Ask your partner for the money? I assume he's the potential father?
