Pregnancy of unknown location at four weeks and feeling terrified

I found out I was pregnant last week, I had period like pains all week and saw my GP who examined me and said she wasn’t worried about an ectopic pregnancy but to get an early scan just in case.

I had an ultrasound today, I mentioned my pains to the EPU and they did bloods, they said my HCG is high but the sonographer could not see anything at all on my ultrasound. Not in my uterus or my ovaries, tubes, anywhere. The sonographer said that by my dates (I think I am only about 4 weeks pregnant) she wouldn’t have expected to see anything anyway, no matter where it was…The doctors on the EPU have scared the life out of me by saying they would expect to see something due to my HCG levels and they are now treating it as a pregnancy of unknown area. They said I need to go back in 48 hours for blood tests to rule out ectopic or miscarriage.

I’m devastated and have been in bits ever since I got back from the hospital because I feel the sonographer and doctors gave me completely different advice. Has anyone had a similar experience and a positive outcome? We tried so hard for this pregnancy and I’m absolutely terrified.

That sounds really stressful op. The sonographer isn't really trained beyond the imaging side of things so based on the image they wouldn't expect to see anything. The Dr's obviously took into account the high high hcg which was high enough for them to be a bit concerned. However, there are so many variables in early pregnancy and they are asking you back in 48 hours to check levels then and that will give them a clearer idea of what going on. I really hope things work out for you but if they don't people are here to support you. Good luck.

I've had this go both ways op. Once was an ectopic and once is 7mo asleep with his dad ATM. As horrible as it is the only way to find out is to wait. Are they doing regular bloods?

@WonderingWanda thank you for your well wishes, I am just hoping that it’s just to soon to tell and that everything is OK 🤞🏻
@ChickenBananaBanana oh no I’m so sorry to hear about your ectopic…did you have any other symptoms and at how many weeks did you find out? And so pleased to hear you have a 7mo 💕
