I am 40+6 today and have just been for a sweep, the midwife said my cervix is soft and is funnelling at about 1.5cm but she couldn’t reach babies head.

I am so desperate for a VBAC but I have a C-Section booked for Tuesday, what do you think my chances are?

Feeling very deflated and think that a VBAC is out of reach now ☹️

Plenty of time for some movememnt before Tuesday. I went for a sweep 2yrs ago at 39+1 and I was actually 4cm already without realising. I didn't end up having the sweep because I had an issue with my waters so was induced instead as an emergency but I was surprised I was already 4cm.

I had been kerb walking twice a day, sitting in the aerobic ball in the evenings (purely from discomfort), sex a few times (although not overly fun given I was the size of a whale) 😂, eating dates.

No idea if any of that worked but if you want to try then maybe look up a few ways. I've heard nipple stimulation is good too but haven't tried. I know of 2 people who had pregnancy massages and went into labour later that evening.

Definitely possible. I wouldn’t do anything crazy to try and bring on labour, but I’d be doing a lot of walking if I wanted to see if I could get things moving.

Was your first c section for the same reason ie not going into labour?

MrsFionaCharming · 28/03/2026 16:36

I was 3 days from my c section date when I went into labour. I did a mile and a half of curb walking then expressed colostrum and went from first contraction to giving birth in 8 hours.

To add, I didn’t have a sweep but I’d been told a day or 2 before this that baby’s head wasn’t engaged.

I went into labour at 42 weeks exact with DS2

Your body will eventually go into labour even if you do nothing , what worked for me this time was scrubbing the bathroom floors, a long walk and washing my hair! Woke up with contractions 1.30am ! I was 41+4 and they had booked me for induction the next day.

I’d honestly try and relax if you can (easier said than done!) and if you can’t relax, then rest! With my eldest I went really overdue and I tried so many things, I was under a lot of pressure to go into labour. Ended up being induced. With my subsequent babies I had already decided I wouldn’t be induced again and went into labour spontaneously around my due date. My midwife was supportive of my decision not to have another induction and I’m confident the lack of pressure is what made the difference. I didn’t do any of the things you’re supposed to do to bring on labour, I was super tired though in the run up so I listened to my body and spent as much time sitting down as I could!

You don’t have to have the c section, you can decline or delay it.
