Strong cramping at five weeks pregnant, anyone else had this?

I’m around 5 weeks pregnant and this is my first pregnancy. I’ve always had very painful periods (I’ve been diagnosed with adenomyosis).

For the past two weeks I’ve been getting episodes of really painful cramping that feel very similar to my usual period pain. Sometimes they are strong enough to wake me up, but they usually last a few minutes and then settle.

I mentioned the cramps to my GP/midwife and they’ve booked me for an early scan next week to rule out ectopic pregnancy. I hadn’t really considered that before so now I’m feeling quite worried.

Has anyone else had strong cramping early in pregnancy that turned out to be normal?

I definitely had period-like cramps for the first few weeks. Was all normal for me. It can just be a sign that things are happening in there!

I hope your early scan goes well and you get some reassurance!

I developed adenomyosis after having my first. I am currently pregnant with my second.
I had exactly the same at 5 weeks, it was very painful. I called the EPU and they asked me to come in for a scan to rule out ectopic. All was absolutely fine and the cramps have stopped (I am just over 6 weeks now).
good luck xx
