7w5d but measuring 6w2d

hi everyone. I recently went through IVF and got pregnant. Everything seemed positive but on my first scan (6w5d) my baby was measuring 3.6mm there was a gestational sac, yolk sac and fetal pole. Although the nurse was worried the embryo was on the smaller side she was happy that there was a heartbeat. I was rescanned a week later (7w5d) and the baby was only measuring 6.1mm which puts me behind 10 days. Now I know that all my dates are bang on as I did IVF so I’m really worried.
the nurse has referred me to the early pregnancy unit to do a follow up scan in 5 days. She said she’s slightly reassured that there haa been some growth albeit very minimal (2.5mm in 7 days) when it should be 1mm per day and the heartbeat is still there. She couldn’t give me BPM or hear the heartbeat but she saw a slow flicker.
is this going to end in miscarriage or do I have she hope? Praying for some success stories. thanks

I haven’t had IVF so I can’t comment. It doesn’t sound good though if im being honest, sorry OP. Hopefully bumping the thread will get you some better answers

I haven’t had ivf so it might be the same but when I was 7 weeks pregnant my gp suspected an ectopic pregnancy with internal bleeding (severe anemia and low blood pressure) so sent me to the edpu for a scan. The scan said I was a week behind at 6 weeks but at my 12 week scan it turns out my date was spot on and the early scan was inaccurate. I did a bit of googling and apparently it’s common for the early scans to be out a bit because of how small everything is. Hoping this is the case for you too and everything goes well.

well To say I’m shocked is an understatement!! Went to the EPU and there are twins! One twin is measuring 5.1mm with a heartbeat and the other not doing so well at 2.1mm with no heartbeat. So the nhs are now dating me at 6 weeks

So you’re now “officially” 8 weeks but only measuring 6? Are they offering another scan in a week or two?

OneQuirkyPanda · 09/03/2026 14:09

I would prepare yourself for a loss unfortunately. I don’t think measuring 6 weeks at 8 weeks pregnant in an IVF pregnancy could be viable, that’s two weeks behind and you will be certain of your dates given it’s IVF.

The embryo should be about 16mm now, but you’re only measuring 5mm, so I don’t think this is viable pregnancy.

Edenmum2 · 09/03/2026 14:54

I don’t understand OP - in your original
post you said baby was 6.1mm but at today’s scan only 5.1? Is this just a typo?

The nhs are treating me as I present rather than my ivf dates as the single embryo has split to make twins. The hospital aren’t concerned as twins will often fall behind. They’re less concerned about the dates and sizes and more about the trend of the growth. I go back to them in 7 days.

The ivf clinic were measuring both babies as one as they didn’t notice there was twins.

Yes the nhs have said they’re disregarding the previous scans and dates and treating me as I present. Because I was being scanned before as just one embryo but there are 2

I’m surprised they managed to get it wrong on 2 scans! I didn’t realise that could happen. Did they still see a heartbeat this time? Was it normal speed?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 09/03/2026 15:31

Sorry just seen you said there was a heartbeat

They think it may have been too early to detect the second twin. I didn’t get a bpm as they said at the EPU they don’t do that this early but they said the one heartbeat looked good. I’m definitely confused about my dates but they don’t seem concerned. More bothered about the growth by next week

In IVF your dates shouldn’t be changed, as they know the exact date of conception, the hospital changed my dates regardless though, so they don’t always stick to this.

Two weeks behind is still very far behind this early on, even with the embryo splitting, and you said your other scan showed very minimal growth, so I hope this is a positive outcome and the scans are not accurate.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 09/03/2026 16:04

I don’t think the hospital are allowed to be particularly negative in situations like this as it can cause so much upset if they are wrong. Keeping my fingers crossed for you OP

SharpAttack · 09/03/2026 16:54

In my experience EPUs will always say they aren’t worried. Even with IVF. As a PP said it’s possibly as they don’t want to worry people in case dates are wrong.

But I was sent to EPU after IVF scan at 7.5 weeks showed a totally empty sac. EPU still told me not to worry and it could just be “too early” to see anything as I could (somehow) only be 4-5 weeks. I knew it was obviously rubbish so I stopped my IVF meds. Sure enough scan a week later showed no growth and was a missed miscarriage.

It is obviously possible with twins that the embryo is just small. I think people are just more advising you to be cautious about being too hopeful just in case.
