Baby measuring small

Hi everyone

I have gone through IVF and I am currently 7 weeks pregnant. At 6 weeks 5 days I had my first early scan and the baby was only measuring at 3.6mm. The nurse told me it should be around 6mm. Should I be worried?? I’m really concerned. I did see a heartbeat so that’s a good sign but the size is throwing me off

Firstly congratulations! Also had a baby through IVF so get the worry you are experiencing.

My first scan at 6 weeks was measuring small (saw heartbeat too) but by the time I had the scan with the clinic between 7 & 8 weeks it was fine. At this stage, it is soo tiny it’s really hard to get an accurate measurement. Plus a heartbeat at 6+5 is a good sign!

IVF pregnancy too. I was:
5+5 1.2mm on TV scan with no hb yet
6+5 2.6mm on TA scan with clear hb
Had fortnightly scans after that (very supportive EPU as previous MCs) and measured spot on once it wasn’t so tiny.
currently 22+6 and all measuring spot on still (weekly scans!)

when they’re really small, lots of things can affect the measurement. I was told at the time not to worry about the measurement as the hb was more clinically significant when so tiny. It was hard to accept but it was true! Best of luck. Will they give you further reassurance scans?

I went back today at 7 weeks 5 days and I’m measuring 6.1mm with a faint heartbeat. I’m so frightened I’m going to miscarry

Were the scans at the IVF clinic? What have they said? Did they seem concerned and rebook you for a further scan?

Sorry to hear it wasn’t a fully positive scan, but there is at least a hb. I hope EPAS/your clinic has given you their opinion, it’s what I would go by in terms of my hopes or fears. It’s such a scary time, I so understand. Thinking of you.

Yes the scans were at the ivf clinic. They said they’re concerned because of lack of growth and not being able to hear or get the hearts bpm. They’ve referred me to the EPU but I just don’t see this being a positive outcome as I’m measuring 10 days behind

She just said she wasn’t overly confident and has referred me to the EPU. They only saw the flicker but couldn’t give me a bpm or hear the heartbeat

I would prepare yourself for bad news. In my experience, when I was measuring 12 days behind (and yes, it had a heartbeat), I ended up losing the pregnancy. I was scanned when I was nearly 8 weeks but it was only measuring 6. You are always told - there's a heartbeat, don't worry. I don't like the false reassurance. So many of us have lost babies after seeing a heartbeat. It wasn't until I was 11 weeks that I ended up miscarrying.
Sorry you are going through this. I have had 3 losses altogether (1 was a chemical so very early). I am now having a successful pregnancy so there is hope for even having multiple losses. Good luck!
